Science Fact of the Month-July 2010

31 07 2010

In follow up of  last month’s fact which covered The Theory  of Natural Selection, we will now look at the Theory of Social Darwinism [ Survival of  the Fittest], which misused the theory of Charles Darwin’s, Natural Selection by applying it to  the social and political world.

The  Theory of Survival of the Fittest was first coined by  English philosopher, Herbert Spencer.  The theory involved  various  nationalities and  races believing that they were superior in strength and intelligence  and  thus  possessed the right and   obligation to dominate over  the  other “inferior” races, who were believed to lack these qualities. They believed that these “inferior” races would ultimately be conquered  or replaced because of their “natural disadvantage.”.  Those who  accepted this are known as Social  Darwinists.

Although this theory is no   longer accepted by reputable Anthropologists today, there are many  unjust  examples from the past which demonstrate this behaviour. One such example is the cruel treatment of Aboriginal people in North America during the time period.

Do you have any other examples  to share? Share  them in the comments  section.
