Stargate To Return With New Series on Amazon Prime

12 12 2025

Indeed, fans of Stargate are now preparing to usher in a new era as the franchise returns with a spinoff!  The announcement comes from Amazon Prime Video that a new series with the same canon will be released worldwide through the streaming platform.

Martin Gero will serve as the official creator and executive producer of the show and Stargate alums Brad Wright and Joseph Mallozzi are also serving as consulting producers for this new edition.

“This has been a very hard secret to keep for the last 18 months, but we can announce today that a brand-new Stargate series is coming to Prime Video,” Gero said to Gateworld.

A title, casting and production location have yet to be released. The season is expected to have ten episodes and the writing team will assemble in January to begin fleshing out the details of the storylines.

Creators of the original Stargate movie released in 1994, Roland Emmerich, Dean Devlin will be serving as producers for the spinoff. Executive producers also include Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures

Gero mentioned that the series will be positioned in a way that newcomers to the franchise can watch it without having to know the backstory of the previous series while still maintaining the essence of what Stargate’s special appeal is to longtime fans. “For us, it’s really important to not only have it so that the fans feel like, ‘This is my Stargate, this is the Stargate I’ve been waiting 14 years for,’ but that a brand new audience can come in without having to have watched 350 episodes of an amazing show – that they can start with episode one of the new Stargate show,” he said. “And then if they love it, then they can go back and watch everything else.”

With the show being shot within the same universe as its predecessors, one might wonder as to whether we will find out about what happened to the beloved characters of Stargate Atlantis or the fate of the crew on Destiny.

Stargate Universe was the last spinoff series and ended in 2011 after just two seasons. It turned a new page on the franchise’s story by being more character driven than its predecessors ,Stargate Atlantis and Stargate SG1.

While there is much to celebrate, there is still some time before the show will make its debut.

We’re starting the writers’ room on the other side of the year,” Gero told GateWorld and Dial the Gate. “These things take about two years, give or take. It might be a little shorter, it might be a little longer — hopefully it’s not longer. Just to set everybody’s expectations, it’s going to be a minute. We wanted to announce early because we didn’t want it to leak. … It had been 20 or 30 people inside the company that had known about it, and to make a show you  have to hire 400 people! … We wanted fans to hear it from us, and not from a leak.”

What is your reaction to Stargate returning and what are your hopes for the new series? How will having creators from both the original Stargate movie and the series allow for styles to be blended? Will this new iteration be a blend of the two styles of the character driven style of storytelling of Stargate Universe vs the classic Stargate storytelling seen in Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis? Will we see any characters from the previous editions and will they just be guest stars or reoccurring roles? Will the show be based from Stargate Command or will it lead us to explore a new galaxy? Sound off in the comments section below!
