Jack Messina Not to Return For Season 4 of Manifest

5 12 2021

While fans of Manifest continue to rejoice in knowing that their efforts in getting their show picked up for a 4th season were successful, it has been solemnly revealed that Jack Messina will not be returning as a regular for the season.Messinna who portrayed the character of Cal Stone, son of Grace and Ben Stone, was an integral part of the show from it’s inaugural season. His character was constantly seen at the centre of the callings which many of the returnees from flight 828 experienced, including his calling which led to the discovery of Zeke.

As season 3 concluded, viewers discovered that Cal had returned and aged 5 years after disappearing from touching the tailfin of flight 828.Why this happened and where Cal disappeared to will likely be a central focus of the coming season.Indeed, this could potentially lead to discovering where flight 828 went for the 5.5 years it disappeared. Actor Ty Doran will now portray the teenage character of Cal and viewers had a glimpse of him in the season 3 finale while he was beside his mother,Grace as she passed away after being attached by Angelina.

However, there is no resentment from Messina and the talented young actor took to social media to wish his former fellow cast members all the best for season 4.He also thanked creator Jeff Rake for the opportunity and was reportedly proactive in efforts to help revive the show after NBC cancelled it last spring.

I want to wish @jeff_rake and everyone at #manifest the best of luck on season 4,” he wrote in the caption.

What is your response to Messina not returning and what are your speculations on where Cal disappeared to?Sound off in the comments section below.

Matt Long to Return as Series Regular For Final Season of Manifest

5 12 2021

Matt Long and Melissa Roxburgh, Manifest

Fans of Manifest have been rejoicing in the success of their efforts in having the series picked up for a 4th season on Netflix after NBC cancelled it last spring, have more to celebrate after it was revealed that Matt Long will be returning as a series regular for the coming final season reports Digital Spy.

This is of particular relief as Long, who portrays the character of Zeke, was expected to be a regular in the anticipated  NBC pilot series Getaway, but the network decided to pass on that which in turn freed up Long’s character. Zeke has been an integral part of the show for now as one of the character’s who beat the death date by saving Cal and for his marriage with Michaela. At the end of the previous season, it became clear to Zeke that Michaela and her her former lover and NYPD colleague Jared Vasquez still harbors feelings for one another .The two were going talk especially after Zeke realized that while Michaela wedded him, that was before his death date and she did not expect for him to survive.

Indeed Manifest creator,Jeff Rake, has commented on the effect of Long’s return stating that it will allow “Zeke to complete his Manifest journey as originally intended”. The final season of Manifest will be an extended one with 20 episodes and production for it is already underway.Stay tuned for more details on the forthcoming season right here.

Are you pleased that Long is returning as Zeke and how would you like to see to his story unfold in the final season? Sound off in the comments section below!

Hot Discussion Topics- Season 2 Finale of The Morning Show

22 11 2021

Alex (Jennifer Aniston) has the unwavering support of Chip

Indeed season 2 of The Morning Show has concluded and with it,we are left with much to ponder about from cancel culture, the impact of Covid, the continued human rights issues of minorities in the workplace, the me too movement all within the context of our beloved or not so beloved characters’ experiences. Here are some of those specific topics and burning questions.Share your thoughts in the comments section as we await for more news about a potential third season to keep the discussion going.

  • Alex spreading Covid and being inconsiderate-speaks to her character or is the gravity of Covid just not understood at that time?
  • Is there any point in Alex trying to put an human face on Mitch? Are some people are just irredeemable?
  • Who filmed Alex at the event?
  • Will Bradley discover what Corey did in terms of revealing her sexuality which in turned cause family problems for her as well as personal distress? Is UBA an organization with a culture where the straight able bodied white males can represent the sexual experiences of females however fits their own agenda?
  • How do you think Bradley will respond to Corey’s profession of love towards her?We saw Bradley disclose that Laura does not understand her family dynamics and perceives it as crazy?Corey on the other hand not only understood her but helped her locate her brother? How will Bradley’s decision to stand by her brother impact her relationship with Laura and who she chooses  pursue a romantic relationship with if anyone at all?
  • Who would you like to see Bradley with and why?
  • What is Corey’s future at UBA considering his streaming platform has failed not to mention his decision about bringing Alex back?
  • Alex having covid-this show reflects the experiences of our times in more ways than one.Did this strike a personal chord with you?
  • Now that the season has concluded, what are your thoughts on Alex Levy?Do you think she is just an awful human being with a narcissistic tendency to glorify herself and forger her own wrong doings?Or is she a flawed human being as many of us are,who has made mistakes but is trying to do better?
  • Daniel quitting.Talking about making his own opportunities as a black person is reflective of the experiences of minorities and marginalized groups.Yet at the same time,he passed on the opportunity to anchor The Morning Show. Would this not have been an opportunity for him to prove the higher ups wrong and be an example or inspiration to people of colour of what they can accomplish?
  • Alex’s monologue contrasting people asking people why she was not held accountable for how well she did her job vs who she slept with.Discuss how our society places people who achieve higher levels of success and notoriety to be moral figures as well.Is it too idealistic to expect that those at the top are necessarily good or is it something we force ourselves to believe because we want to impose an order of justice in the world that may simply not exist?
  • Chuck sacrificing so much for Alex-how do you view their relationship?
  • What do you think is next for Alex Levy,The Morning Show and UBA?Where will the series go from here if season 3 transpires?

The Morning Show Season 2 Episode 8-Review and Hot Topics

7 11 2021

Discussion Points

  • Bradley’s decision or inclination to abandon her brother-can one blame her or does she have an obligation as she too did not achieve her current status without the support of others?
  • Alex seems to be a horrible human being. That is our stance on her for now, but what do you think and why? When she went to deliver the news to Mitch’s ex wife,Paige, she herself is forced to acknowledge that she was not coerced into sleeping with him like so many of the other woman who Mitch had actually victimized. Was she an enabler to a sexual predator? Does she not care about whether someone is a predator as long as she does not look bad? This season has been a lot about trying to piece together who Alex actually is vs her reputation.Do you see a discrepancy or not?
  • Also the fact that Alex had the audacity to tell Paige that she only had relations with Mitch twice as if that somehow made it less excusable shows how unaware of certain parts of who she is.We have seen how she seems to have a selective memory when it comes to her own wrong doings both recent and from long ago. What are your thoughts on this?
  • The interesting aspect of this show which corresponds to our own lives is that while it is an individual who commits assaults on a victim,is there a culture present which condones these types of behaviors in society, particularly towards those at the top. While Mitch has passed, the question remains if this culture at UBA,which some may say is apart of his legacy, may remain and if so, how can true change come about? Is having Bradley announce Mitch’s death symbolic of this change? Discuss.
  • Stella taking charge-Stella is showing more comfort in her role and assuming a sense of authority.
  • Chuck and Alex- will they reconcile? While Chuck used harsh words towards Alex, was  he not  just being truthful?Does Alex not have any remorse for the challenges she causes to her team and network when she disappears abruptly?
  • The complexity of humanity can be seen in the mixed responses towards Mitch’s demise.
  • On a lighter note, will you or will you not miss Steve Carell’s involvement on The Morning Show?

These are just some discussion topics from the previous episode.Feel free to respond to any or all of them and share some of your own in the comments section below!

Hot Discussion Topics From The Morning Show’s La Amara Vita

31 10 2021

Steve Carell in “The Morning Show" (Apple TV+)
  • What repercussions will the release of the book have on Alex’s career, given that she has been viewed as a feminist after what she did in the season 1 finale with Bradley? Moreover, how will it impact her family dynamics as has been foreshadowed this year.
  • Alex is complicated-her guilt by association. One might ask if men are held to the same level of accountability when associated with a female who is morally tainted?
  • We see that while Alex wants to hate Mitch,it is almost like she knows two different versions of him and in this time of crisis wanted to go back to that familiarity of Mitch.
  • We know that Alex has a tendency to forget the horrible things she says or does-do you think her encounter with Mitch and his subsequent demise, will cause her to evaluate who she is and who she wants to be?Do you think she or anybody like her is capable of change and how would this impact UBA’S  future? On a broader note,to what extent are we as human beings are capable of change?
  • Mitch’s demise-Mitch appears to be more of a character who can’t really experience empathy or concern for something not directly related to him. He desperately wants to be seen as a good  person but does not really want to take responsibility for anything he has done as seen by his response to being progressive for liking black woman as opposed to recognizing he was a predator. Perhaps he truly is nuts because he does not have insight. What is your response to how they killed him off?
  • Going forward, will UBA face another lawsuit from Bradley Jackson when she finds out Corey divulged her sexual orientation? Will this bring out a larger discussion of their treatment towards LGBT and other minority employees?

These are just some discussion topics from the previous episode.Feel free to respond to any or all of them and share some of them in the comments section below!

Hot Topics For Season 2 of Apple TV’S Morning Show

24 10 2021

Janina Gavankar, Desean Terry, Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Nestor Carbonell

  •  We are now covering Apple TV’S The Morning Show featuring Jennifer Aniston and Steve Carell.Check our list of hot topics from this season so far and share your response in the comments section! If you like, feel free to share any other topics from this season and the show in general that you would like to explore!
  • Can UBA ever really achieve change with so many of the same players in leadership ?Brings to the question of to what extent we as humans are capable of doing better?

·      LGBT rights in the show.Is outing Bradley still a toxic culture similar to the one that led Hannah to commit suicide? While it’s not about rape, it puts an employee’s personal life in the public light in a way that could have had catastrophic consequences. While Hannah’s loss is tragic, compromising Bradley’s well being may not be the solution in preventing further loss or harm?Daniel’s response to the to his bigoted cohort’s response about him wanting to not lose the gay space shows the ignorance that people have towards minority groups at large,in treating them as using their minority status to get ahead instead of recognizing their actual struggles as well as them holding their posts because of their own merits.

·      Corey wanted to protect Hannah’s name, but it is also likely that he is jealous about her relationship with Laura.

·      Laura Peterson’s privilege vs Bradley’s upbringing. Can Laura really appreciate what Bradley is going through given how Bradley is from a different part of the country that is not typically as accepting as the rest of the country generally is now?

·       Mitch- seems to be self victimizing himself while also acting apologetic.

·       Yanko’s diversity issue. He is portrayed as a right leaning character. What are your thoughts are on the spirit animal issue ?Do you think that issue reflects a time where we are becoming more enlightened to the perspectives of others and recognizing racism in all of it’s forms or is it a reflection of a time where certain topics have been  unduly polarized? It’s odd because he is a Trump supporter but seems to think he is immune from being a racist because he is a Cuban immigrant.

·      Is Alex really as bad as others portray her or is it the issue of women being victimized no matter how they present themselves and being criticized by other women? We are learning about how others perceive wrong doings by Alex but we don’t have all the pieces of the puzzle to know if their observations are accurate.Definitely how she treats others in present day does not speak highly about her and she does seem to conveniently forget about horrible things she has said or done.

·      The comment about white men getting second chances– although Alex got a second chance and is a white female, we can see how the white characters in general get so much leeway and more opportunities to mess things up than their minority counterparts. Do you agree with this?

·      The board’s response in trying to divide Cory and Stella. This is also related to culture of backstabbing one another in the workplace which diverts attention from preventing ethical issues in the workplace from coming up.

Kim’s Convenience Stars Nicole Power and Andrew Phung Receive Greenlight For New CBC Shows

28 03 2021

"Kim's Convenience" stars Nicole Power and Andrew Phung, seen in a composite image of two undated handout photos, are getting their own CBC shows.
Nicole Power and Andrew Phung

While fans of Kim’s Convenience continue to express their dismay at the beloved hit TV series being  abruptly cancelled at the end of it’s current 5thseason, one very special character from the show a spinoff based on her for CBC and another is getting his own CBC series about family life in the suburbs.

To start with the optimistic and somewhat happy go lucky character of Shannon Ross played by Nicole Power is heading to Hamilton to embark on a new career in this exciting new series entitled Strays.

The cast includes Tina Jung (SuitsSecond Jen), Nikki Duval (Rosie on Workin’ Moms), Kevin Vidal (Mo on Workin’ Moms, as well as a few CBC Comedy videos with Soul Decision Comedy), Tony Nappo (Pretty Hard Cases), Frank Cox O’Connell (Anne of Green Gables: Fire and Dew) Paula Boudreau (Workin’ MomsTiny Pretty Things) and Emily Piggford (The SoundsWarigami).

The show was created by Kevin White who was a co-creator of Kim’s Convenience and lent his creative talents to many other comedy series such as Corner Gas, Insecurity and Dan for Mayor.

It looks like this is one of the projects which one of the co-creators is moving onto  which led to the producers not receiving the support they felt they needed to continue Kim’s Convenience. One might ask why he simply did not postpone this project for another year to focus on giving a proper ending to Kim’s Convenience by doing a sixth season and then launching this spinoff? This would have made sense commercially/financially in attaining maximum benefit of both projects and maintaining a reputation of being fully committed to providing exceptional viewing experiences to fans across the globe.

It should be noted that this series was intended to air alongside Kim’s Convenience to reflect today’s young person and their professional and personal journeys outside the density of  the urban core of Canadian cities. That being said, for the purposes of continuity, it would have likely meant that Nicole Power would not have reprised in her role as a series regular in a sixth season of Kim’s Convenience.

Additionally, CBC has also ordered a season of Run the Burbs which features  Kim’s Convenience’s Andrew Phung who is famously known for his role as Kim Chee. This series features Phung portraying the role of a stay at home dad with an entrepreneur wife and 2 kids  who all  reside in the suburbs and aim to make the most of life by doing so. More details regarding this series shall be released by the CBC later this spring.

What are your thoughts on these two new series and which one are you the most excited for at this point?Sound off in the comments section below!

Kim’s Convenience Cancelled- To Abruptly End With Season 5

28 03 2021

Kim's Convenience

Indeed, we are saddened to report that Kim’s Convenience  will end upon the conclusion of its current 5thseason currently slated for April 13th. The news comes after both of the show’s co-creators decided to depart from working on the show to pursue other projects and the producers felt they could not continue to deliver the existing quality of the show.

Given their departure from the series, we have come to the difficult conclusion that we cannot deliver another season of the same heart and quality that has made the show so special,” the producers said in a statement Monday.

The news has been shocking to both the stars and  fans especially considering both the global success of  the show and how the series was already given the greenlight for its 6thseason last year.

Simu Liu told etalk’s Sonia Beeksma that “it doesn’t feel great.” He said the decision was not “in alignment with” the cast’s wishes.

“I think, for myself, I was definitely hoping to come back for season six and, you know, there was just this feeling that the show was doing so well commercially and critically and had reached such a wide fanbase all over the world,” he added.

Unfortunately, as a result of the show’s abrupt cancellation, many of the short and long term story lines which have defined the series will not be resolved including the tense relationship between Liu’s character, Jung and Apa  as well as what Jung will do with his life.

The circumstances surrounding this cancellation are highly unusual considering there was only one season left and  even more so with the producers announcing the cancellation as opposed to the creators. It some ways, it seems like such a waste after fans have invested 5 years into the stories of the beloved characters that made the show what it is only not to have the chance to view a proper end.

Stay tuned for more details surrounding the cancellation as they become available. In the meantime, share your response to the cancellation in the comments section below. Also, what will you miss most about the show? Sound off in the comments section below!

Exclusive Interview With Kim’s Convenience’s Ishan Davé

7 03 2020

ISHAN DAVÉ is a Toronto-based film, television, and theatre performer who’s sixteen-year professional career has led him across Canada, Europe and the United States. He is a multiple Canadian Screen Award & Dora Award nominee, and a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada.Current streamable film & television performances include Kim’s Convenience (Netflix/CBC Gem), Slasher: Solstice (Netflix), Hudson & Rex (CityTV), and Mouthpiece (Patricia Rozema). Upcoming works include ‘Untitled Sugar Daddy Drama’ (Kelly McCormack, Wendy Morgan).
Ishan is also a proud associate artist with the Toronto-based performance collective It Could Still Happen, and a natural ink-maker.

With Kim’s Convenience progressing through its current fourth season and Ishan’s character being at the centre of Janet’s love triangle this season, I thought it was an opportune time to catch up with the actor. Specifically, I to get his insights on his character and the show’s impact on Canadian culture.

Read through the interview below and share your thoughts on it in the comments section below!

Abbas Karimjee: Lets discuss your appointment to the role of Raj. Could you please walk us your experience through the initial process?

ISHAN DAVÉ: It was an audition with the Canadian casting legend Deirdre Bowen!

AK: Have you been able to relate to Raj?
ID
: The actor Michael Greyeyes gave an interview on Q where he said Native actors are often working from inside a system to expand it, to bring it towards their subjectivity. I am of course not Indigenous and I would never compare my journey as an East Indian actor to Michael Greyeyes’ journey or to that of any Native actor. However, there is something deeply true about this sentiment for me. It is rare to be a part of a show that allows for a multi-dimensional experience of a character, when one’s skin color has not been at the center of the dominant culture for 160 years. In other words, a character with a sense of struggle, a sense of stakes with joy and despair, an inherent problem. So often, and still, characters of color are cast as foils that advance the story arcs of the sophisticated white leads with the real emotional dilemmas–

I mean, the Canadian Screen Award Nominees for 2020 were just released and out of the television ‘Lead’ Acting Categories, 3 actors are people-of-color (out of 20 nominees).
With Raj, I feel that the creators of Kim’s are invested in a character with a lot happening in his heart. When I approach the character I always try to bring myself inside it, to extend and explore what Raj’s dilemmas are, and this approach has only been welcomed!

AK: In the season 3 of finale of Kim’s Convenience, Raj broke off his engagement with his fiancé in order to pursue a romantic relationship with Janet, whose heart he previously broke by treating as her a casual fling. Do you think that this shows that Raj has developed and what you would like to see happen between him and Janet?

ID: Love is complicated. My friend Claudia Dey wrote a book called Heartbreaker and in the epigraph she has an Alice Notley quote which is

“in love, there is no because”.

I think about this quote all the time because I think we always want fast and reliable answers, especially with love, and they are just not there.

On the surface Raj can be seen as a cheater and a quitter. But if we look at his context, he comes from an oppressive family structure and he is deeply confused. So, I believe we meet Raj at a turning point in his life (which of course happens largely off screen).

After he’s finally appeased his parents’ wishes and become a Doctor, he is, in a sense, free. He is figuring things out as they happen, and he doesn’t quite have the words for his feelings because in conservative immigrant families, feelings are not given primacy. And so, the present moment often betrays him, when it comes to words.

But at his heart Raj is a person who wants something to break. He wants liberation. In Janet, he sees a rebellious soul and he is drawn to it; her wit, her irreverence, her depth and intensity, her beauty, and her awkwardness inside it. It inspires him, and he does not yet know how to come close to it with a mindful heart. He’s a bit desperate, for the time being. But at the centre of Raj’s world is the feeling that he and Janet have more in common than they both realize.

AK: While Kim’s Convenience focuses heavily on Kim’s family, it also showcases people from other ethnicities such as your character from the South Asian community as well as African Canadians, Arabs and Caucasians. Do you think the show has both reflected and impacted Canadian culture and if yes, how so?

ID: I think Kim’s is a highly innovative show that will be referenced, cited, and watched for generations. Hopefully it will also act as a springboard for many other shows in the future. The show bridges class divides as well as racial divides and I know people feel that very deeply. It is my lived experience based on who writes to me on the internet, and who stops me in the street. Almost always, someone expresses that it’s great to finally see their ethnicity reflected on TV.

AK: What are some of your favorite memories from working on Kim’s Convenience on screen and/or off screen?

ID: There was a moment when Andrea, Soma & I were sitting on the beach while filming season 3. The crew were setting up for the next moment and we had a small break. The three of us were looking out at the water and joking around and I felt especially lucky in that moment. Though, on the set of Kim’s which more resembles a motley crew of a family, I feel lucky constantly.

AK: You are an award-winning actor who has been on countless successful programs. What advice do you have for those who are members of visible minority groups and others in general who wish to pursue a career in the Canadian entertainment industry? Were there any specific obstacles you had to overcome to achieve the success you enjoy today?

ID:It doesn’t matter how much or little experience you have; your integrity is a human right.Do not be afraid of rocking the boat if you’re uncomfortable with how you’re being treated. Because no one will manage that for you, except you.

It’s also important to know that you don’t have to accept any job that comes your way. The industry is deeply saturated, as saturated as our World of stories, and other opportunities will arise that suit your soul. You don’t have to be a “token” bit part in someone else’s unaware story. Seriously. You don’t! Skip the pay check and eat out less for the next month. You’ll feel better.

There is an unhealthy trend with acting and performers, a perception that any project will lead us closer to our dreams. I remember hearing a Charlie Kaufman interview once and he said, people hire you for what they see you do, not what you don’t do. In this way, you will be asked to do more of what you’re seen in. This is how laws of attraction operate.

I’ve always found this to be true and in this story saturated industry, it’s a bit naïve to believe that my bellboy role on COLLISION 4.0! will get me in the room with Gus Van Sant or Claire Denis or Sofia Coppola, etc. So may as well set the foundation of choices with genuine love than for “opportunity.”

Of course there are always exceptions and it’s a case-by-case situation, but that’s generally how I strive to treat my career.

AK: Do you have a message for fans of Kim’s Convenience?

ID: Thank you for your time, love, and attention. You are what makes everything worth it.
(& don’t give up on Raj. He is hope that men can change!)

Manifest Season 2 Trailer and Exclusive Discussion Questions

23 12 2019

  • The callings seem to be answering some of the questions brought forth from the premiere such answering where our passengers were for 5.5 years.Through the callings, we can see they are discovering that they may have crashed on an Island.
  • Given this, why do none of them remember this and what does Cal exactly discover- does it piece together the puzzle of their mystery? Is there an extra terrestrial or divine force behind this that will be explained?
  • Why are the callings revealing to them what may have happened during their disappearance at this specific point and will their revelations help extend or at least understand their supposed expiry dates?
  • On another note, who you think the father of the Grace’s child is?How will the identity of the father impact who she potentially chooses as her mate, moving forward? If the child is Ben’s, how will the supernatural experiences contribute to the development of this child? If it is Danny’s,will Ben still be graceful or will it be the tipping point of his patience in dealing with his wife’s duplicity ?
  • It seems Zeke survived, but if he is not giving up without a fight, could that mean Jared has also survived?Who would you like to see Michaela with?
  • What is the violent threat the passengers are facing and how does this connect this new character who is threatening to expose a “danger the passengers pose”?How does the major play into all of this.
  • What else are you looking forward to seeing from the coming season of Manifest? The theme of balancing faith and science in understanding that which cannot be easily comprehended is an interesting theme as is the family dynamics and how they evolve(or deteriorate) through the passage of time and separation.

The 100 Season 6 Finale Reflections

1 09 2019

Image result for the 100 season 6

What exactly is the anomaly ?Is it an alternate reality where time moves faster or does it provide access to the future? Perhaps it incorporates a bit of both. What are your predictions?

What happened to Octavia while she was in the anomaly and why did hope to come?

Did our beloved characters do better/ is saving their life of many, even if it means sacrificing the lives of those you love moral? Now that Abby has been killed, how will this impact healthcare and therefore perhaps the impact of their actions?

Now that our beloved characters actually have dominance over a land, will they still be able to do better and not repeat the mistakes of any of the other leaders we have seen on this show?

Jordan’s response -is the illusion of peace better than the loss of lives for the greater good and future of humanity? We disagree with Jordan as the people in Sanctum were only happy, as he suggested, because they were led to believe murder for immortality was a divine spiritual process.

Religion-the people of Sanctum had a commitment bias as even after Russel had abandoned them, they chose to blame Bellamy and the team to deal with their cognitive dissonance instead of accepting the truth. Discuss the power of cognitive dissonance not only for faith, but in general.

Although some lives were lost, our characters ended up saving more lives by taking the primes out as they simply would have continued.

Both the primes and the flame were destroyed, representing the end of the two main religions that we have seen in the show. As Gaia said, they will never bow again. Will the anomaly provide them with a new faith to believe in or can they build a secular society based on just laws?

Is Russel still alive or did Clarke kill him?

Sanctum becomes a battleground between the devout and the non-believers; the mystery of the anomaly deepens(IMDB)
  • Discussion Centre-Sound off on your thoughts on the below and the season in general on the comments section below!Be sure to subscribe to the blog through the sidebar on the right for our special Season 6 Review and Top Questions post next week!
  • Abby’s death- Clarke tried to save her loved ones but failed Abby. What is your reaction on Abby’s demise? While Echo was trying to save herself, her actions inadvertently caused an extra host to be required, though they would have probably chose Abby anyway?
  •  Discuss how she made peace with Raven and Jackson before departing.
  • Naming ceremony –Using Briker’s chip as leverage to get Priya to reveal the truth and lower the shield.
  • Are our characters finally doing better by saving not the few but many? However, if you end up losing someone you really care about despite saving more lives, is that really better? For example, Gabriel not being able to kill Russell would logically cause more lives to be lost if he and Clarke not using enough of the toxin to actually cause harm to those on Sanctum instead of hoping for an evacuation to be triggered, are examples of aiming to preserve the life of many but outing those you care about in jeopardy. Is the most effective way to govern to be ruthless?
  • Why would anyone on Sanctum believe in the Primes after they abandoned them to take over themselves?Discuss how belief can sometimes make one blind to the obvious without attacking any specific faith group.
  • Discuss Octavia and Miller’s interaction as well as Jackson’s thought on being war criminals. Even if the primes are defeated, will the characters ever truly forgive themselves?
  • Presumably Clarke will end the lives of the Primes on the ship?
  • If our beloved characters can acquire leadership of Sanctum, how will they rule to avoid the issues of the past and what other challenges might they encounter?
  • Murphy and Emory ultimately coming back for their friends- Discuss the development of Murphy’s character- can he ever be fully trusted and what will his path to redemption be?
  • Will we see Dyoza and/or Jordan in the finale?

How will Clarke, Bellamy , Octavia and Gabriel break through the shield. Will the revolution which is unfolding positively impact their ability to get through into Sanctum? Also, how will Bellamy and Gabriel’s differing views on whom the scope of their rescue will include, impact how the rescue is done? Does doing better as per Monty’s vision mean that our beloved characters rescue not only those whom they love but all those who are innocent? Or is Monty’s vision of doing better simply unattainable until the enemy is destroyed, regardless of the costs?

Is Bellamy’s behaviour towards Octavia warranted , given that she has repented from her actions as Bloodreina? Is he in a position to judge her at this point, given how many times he has been pardoned for great atrocities ?

The 100 Season 6 Episode 11-Ashes to Ashes-Promo and Exclusive Up To Date Discussion

19 07 2019

Bellamy and Octavia must work together to save their friends; Echo is forced to face her past(IMBD)

Will this be the start of Octavia and Bellamy healing their deeply wounded relationship? What plan will they come up with to save their friends and how will Clarke play a role in this? What aspects of Echo’s past will exactly be explored and how will this exploration relate to what they are facing in the present?

Additional Notes

If you are a Bellarke fan , feel free to share your reaction to the end scene! If you are not, what do you make of their interactions in the last episode. The head vs heart saying is a true testament to their friendship!

In the last episode, Russell said they would be no better than our beloved characters if they were to kill them all. It seems that the Primes have , on some level, convinced themselves that they are pure since they don’t use physical force to acquire hosts even though they still kill others by using religion as a tool to convince them to accept murder for their own survival. It’s interesting to see the denial there and also to note that our characters, excluding Murphy, have never started any violence unprovoked or wanted to more than to live out a decently and normal as mere mortals!

Raven’s plan to isolate the dark commander-can she save Madi and how will Gaia be able to help in rescuing her soul?

Gabriel and Josephine- its interesting to see how Josephine was once had some humanity! Now that Gabriel’s secret is out, will he have somebody take out his mind drive once the war against Sanctum is done? Will we get to see an encounter between Russell and Gabriel?

Will the residents of Sanctum develop their own civil war as the word begins to spread that they have been sacrificing their loved ones for false Gods and how might this impact the well being of our beloved characters?

Even if Clarke does save her friends(which we have a feeling she will as she always does!)where will they go? Will they stay to free the residents of Sanctum as a honouring Monty’s vision of doing better and then use Sanctum as their new home. Or will they retreat to the ship and see where they might be able to go next? There were several other mining outposts where life could be habitable, but what kind of people might they encounter there, even if that is possible?

Burning Questions For The 100 Season 6 Before Episode 10,Matryoshka

13 07 2019

Here are our burning questions after watching episode 9 of the current sixth season of The 100. Share your thoughts on them in the comments section below!

Image result for the 100 season 6 episode 9

Kane sacrificing his life and taking the night blood serum with him- What will be Abby, Indra and Raven’s next move. They could potentially hold those on Sanctum hostage on the ship until their people are handed over to them safely. When will Abby discover what has happened to Clarke and do you think Abby will ever do better?

Will we see Dyoza again and where do you think she is?

Octavia’s redemption- Just because Octavia does better, does it mean she is worthy of being redeemed in the eyes of others. Will we see the Octavia who we knew before Lincoln remerge? Do you think the anomaly chose to bring Octavia because she can do better?

This season has been about redemption for each of our character- which character’s journey have you enjoyed the most an do you think one character is worthier of redemption than another

Will Jordan survive after Madi attacked him?

Will Gabriel actually remove Josephine from Clarke and will Clarke’s plan to use Josephine as leverage to negotiate the safety of her friends work? How would Josephine even be removed?

The idea of the host is very interesting and different from other science fiction where the parasite has full control and can decide when and where the host has control. Will Josephine try to trick Clarke the same way Clarke tricked her to have some control and will she use this to manipulate Gabriel in any way?

Even if all of our beloved characters can be saved, where will they go. Is their only option to destroy the Primes or can they work to create a rebellion from within to ultimately save the hosts who have been taken by them and free their society as well.

Synopsis-Bellamy must venture into enemy territory with an unlikely companion. Meanwhile, Octavia is forced to confront her past. Source:IMBD

Be sure to watch the trailer for the coming episode below and share your thoughts on it and some of the discussion ideas in the comments section below! Also, be sure to tune in for the episode on Tuesday, July 9th!

  • Discuss the full extent of Josephine’s sociopathy- she has the chance to take a willing host but instead is using the EMP to destroy Clarke. Perhaps she has set herself up for worse as she has now been captivate-no complaints from us though!
  • Discuss the theme of greed and how it has influenced the primes but also how it impacts mankind.
  • Discuss the theme of how religion and culture at large can influence what people as view as good or bad
  • Abby’s fixation on Kane has led her to being oblivious about the signs that Clarke is in danger even when Bellamy and Echo could figure it out. Talk about her role as a mother and competing priorities/.
  • Discuss Kane’s reaction and how do you think he will respond to Abby, who made the choice of murdering someone else and supporting the advancement of a false religion to ensure his existence. Do you think he will still remain in a relationship with Abby? Will he try to learn how to remove the drive from himself or will he be the inside man for those of the people of earth who are now in captivation?
  • Has Raven sacrificed her innocence by enabling Abby to develop the process of making night bloods?
  • The Primes seem to have a standard of practice of only selecting those who are willing, but really what they are doing is practicing self-deception as indoctrination is the enemy against freewill and independent thought. It is interesting to see how they want to be both murders and still maintain the self-reflection
  • Will Gabriel actually help Clarke or will his love for Josephine resurface? Now that Bellamy has Clarke he has leverage in negotiating with Josephine and The Primes.
  • The anomaly -is it a sign from the universe or what exactly is it ? Octavia was the only one to come out- will Dyoza as she seems to be a person the Primes were concerned of if she was with Gabriel. Are they along with Bellamy, the force can defeat the people of Sanctum?!
  • Murphy’s betrayal- it seems like he had developed but he has return to his selfish ways. He chose the easier path instead of actually becoming a better person.
  • Russel’ violation of using ab unwilling host- will this be the cause of a rebellion of dismay amongst his followers. Also, will the mechanic who supposedly let Gabriel go from Sanctum help them/
  • Madi’s dark commander- can she be salvaged and who will be able to help her overcome this as her behavior prompted them to be caught/

  • Discussion Centre
  • Although Clarke may have killed more than the number of people she has saved, her intention was to save the people she loved and more often than not, they were the people who had first been provoked. Does being the good guy include the definition of self-defense and looking out for those you love or is it associated with how many lives one saves even if the lives are of evil people?
  • Pike taught Clarke the mores code which enabled her to communicate to Bellamy that she is alive and were it not for the EMP caused by Ally. Discuss the theme of how negative people or experiences can have their benefit
  • Discuss the theme of how like Clarke, we have our inner demons and perhaps our own worst enemy is sometimes ourselves. Also, discuss the idea of willpower and perhaps how Clarke’s own struggle in surviving in mind space, is similar to the struggle of mental illness.Discuss the theme of self forgiveness  not only for Clarke but how each of the characters have done things which would haunt them.
  • Clarke’s decision to surrender-Her people need her now more than ever-instead of just surviving, perhaps they can actually do better by freeing the people who are taken as hosts by the Primes. However, are there any skeptics among their followers who can lead in a rebellion.
  • Monty’s return-discuss your reaction in seeing him again.
  • Which interaction with Clarke in the mind space did you enjoy the most.
  • How does Bellamy intend on saving Clarke?
  • Thoughts on Josephine- why is she the way she is?
  • Do you think Monty’s vision for them to do better is attainable or will there always be conflict?
  • What else will Clarke be able to do now that she has some control of her body without Josephine knowing?

The 100 Season 6 Episode-Gospel of Josephine -Synopsis, Reflections and Exclusive Discussions

27 05 2019

  • Synopsis -Jordan investigates Sanctum. Meanwhile, Octavia and Diyoza discover the threats of the new planet firsthand. Lastly, Bellamy and Clarke butt heads.TV Guide
  • Discussion Centre
  • Is Clarke really gone or is there a way to bring her back. Is there research on site that can be used to bring her back and who will be the first to discover.
  • Will Doze and Octavia’s findings with the Children of Gabriel allow them to revolt against the prime’s and perhaps cure Clark.
  • If they do revolt, will Octavia find redemption in the eyes of Bellamy
  • What are your thought’s on Jordan feeling guilty. Don’t you think Harper and Monty would ultimately want their child to have the best possible life?
  • What will Jordan discover after realizing Delilah is not who she was once was.
  • Also discuss the idea of how the Prime have basically created a society from which they harvest people to host the original descendants, but the people do not mind being harvested and in fact view it as a blessing or honour.
  • Do you think Wonkru or Skykru will be able to revolt by changing the minds of some of the inhabitants of planet or at least connect with a spy inside the camp after realizing that Clarke is gone or at the very least trapped?
  • Big question- if the children of Gabriel are truly different, then why would they expect their leader, Gabriel to be alive centuries later, unless he too has taken a host like the primes have done. What exactly are the philosophical and ideological differences between these two groups.
  • It was strange than none of our characters asked what the naming ceremony is and opted for a sense of safety, however false, as opposed to at least discovering what it is. Delilah’s comments should have been a strong indicator, but the characters were taken away by the sights and sounds of peace and amusement
  • Echo’s comment of her childhood-learning more about her backstory to discover why it’s hard for her feel safe. Fortunately, she won’t have to feel that way for long as they are under risk.
  • Clarke and Raven- Do you agree that Octavia is the same as Clarke. We don’t as Clarke never liked being under power or making the difficult choices she had, but made them out of pure love for her family and friends. Octavia, on the other hand was destined to be in power no matter what other better options were present for her people.
  • Clarke and Bellamy- Clarke telling him he was family was so touching, but would you forgive her.?
  • Like the previous grounders, the characters now find themselves trapped in a society based upon a religious institution that are designed to serve a few and harm many, Contrast to your own perspective of religion today but be sure to not target any religion as part of our respect rule, but perhaps make broad connections.
  • The question remains- even if they are able to overcome the prime, will there be any habitable land left or will they have to yet again embark on a trip through space and time to locate another planet
  • Reflect on Monty’s words about doing better as this plane and being the good guys, are there truly any good guys or does self-preservation and defence constitute being good by engaging in self respect?
  • Contrast to Mount Weather which looked glamorous a first but our beloved characters are being exploited for their bodies
  • If you watched our coverage of Stargate from several years ago, you might contrast the prime to the Gouald and those who follow them as Jaffa.
  • Do you have hope for those who are on Sanctum with Dyoza on the outside?

Be sure to share your thoughts on the interview in the comments section below!

Abbas Karimjee: Okay so it’s  great to have you back here! It has been so many years so it’s great to connect–I know we haven’t connected since Little Mosque so it’s been a while.

 Arlene Duncan:I know!

AK: Yeah and so I have had a chance to watch Diggstown and I love it.It’s such a great show!

AD: Oh great!

AK: Yes, it’s such a great show and it so great that it features visible minorities but also feature…

AD: I know -it’s so diverse, a mixture of everything and it’s a real community!

 AK: Exactly!

AD: And where our family, lives the Diggs family itself- North Preston-  it is one of the largest original settlements of Nova Scotia and one of the largest black settlements in Canada.

AK:  That’s great! So,you have a personal connection to the region and how did that impact how you were able to portray the character and connect with the storyline?

AD: Now when you are asking about a personal connection….I do have family that lives in Truro so they are not in North Preston, but the interesting thing about that is that there was a point in my career where I was like I have played as far west as British Columbia and I have been as far as east as Quebec so I kept saying I want to get to Nova Scotia! Also, every year my cousins would go to Nova Scotia to visit their family and I would hear all these fabulous stories about how beautiful it was and all the fun things that they were doing while I was here in Ontario! So, I said at some point I want to get to work at Nova Scotia because of the African Canadian and Jamaican connections.

So, I sort of put it out into the universe and I did Mr. D which was the first thing I did out there!

AK: Yes!

AD: Afterwards,I had some friends who I met from coming back and forth between….because the Canadian industry is a small industry in general (laughs)….so I knew Juanita Peters who does a lot of films down there and is just involved in the culture of Nova Scotia.  And Walter Borden who is a legendary actor etc. -…. I ran into them when I was doing Mr. D. And Juanita wanted to do a play that she had written and I was down there for about two months doing that original play.

A couple of years go by and I end up doing Diggstown in Nova Scotia. So, when you put things out….

AK: Exactly-it sort of manifests itself –that is wonderful!

AD: They manifest, yes!I was just delighted to do the show out there.

AK: Well, we love your character! So,you are also an artist of course and a mother.Your character shared these similarities with you so how has that helped you relate to your character?

AD: Well another layer that I love about this character is that as a singer,I have done musical theatre, recorded jingles, done musical albums, been a recording artist and etc.….so, my musical career has been one thing and my acting thing has been another… but to be able to do a character who is isn’t in a musical movie per say …this is a part of her character, its apart of her life and it’s something you rarely ever get!

AK: A dream come true!It is so rare and it’s a perfect combo for you.

AD: Yeah so,I am just so thrilled about that. The family element is also great because it brings a level of reality. And in Little Mosque we got to see how even though we are all from different cultures, everybody is essentially the same.We all have same problems whether we are Italian, east Indian, black or whatever.Everybody has family dynamics!

AK: Exactly- we are all human first!

AD: Yeah and it’s not a thing that Marcy has these things happening in her family, it just is.And I think people can relate to it because we all have these situations! It is not that it is black family that   it that it is happening to; it is a family that it is happening that to!

AK: Exactly and we can all understand each other more by realizing how similar we are.

AD: Right! And it also you know oh yea this is my family “.They look so fabulous on the outside and every family does- but everybody has their layers and their dynamics.

AK: Yea that’s for sure! (laughs)

AD: And I think it is interesting to see that from a black perspective!

AK: Oh, for sure and that’s been really compelling about this story too. And the great thing is that you have also worked on several other laws shows such as In Contempt and Suits. Has that impacted how you have been able to perform on Diggstown and just connect with the characters?

AD: I don’t think it has had a relation to how I perform in Diggstown. However, every experience contributes to the whole 10,000 hours thing(laughs). The more experience you have, the more experience you can bring to your work. And the more experiences you have in life the more experiences you can bring to your work as an artist!

AK: Exactly -it all adds up!

AD: Yes.

AK: That is great and the great thing about Diggstown is that it focuses on a lot of different…

AD: Contemporary issues.

AK: Exactly.Contemporary issues, especially as they relate to racial minorities, people with disabilities and

AD: Lower income people too ….

AK: Exactly and people from low socio-economic backgrounds. So how do you think the show is building bridges and raising awareness about some of the challenges these individuals face in our legal system?

AD: Well, I just think the very fact that they are being highlighted is great. A lot of the times you have high profile cases and it’s good to see how the average man and the life experiences of the average man…. I am not even going to say the average man …

AK: Sort of like the underdog.

AD: For example, in the second last episode we did, you would never imagine in someone’s home you got these cute little teenage girls who would be having a brothel(laughs)

 AK: Exactly (laughs )

AD: Not even a brothel but a prostitution ring! You don’t expect that kind of thing! And when you look at them, they look like regular teenage girls.

AK: Exactly-they look like people you would know!

AD: Right! I think it’s just brilliant how the writers just come up   with these ideas. Our writer/creator was a lawyer at some point so…

AK: Yes, that makes big difference because there is so much you can draw on for sure.

AD: Yes,a lot of detail!

AK: For sure! So, let’s focus a little on Little Mosque on the Prairie- it has been 7 years now since the finale aired!

AD: Oh my God!

AK: I know -can you believe it?

AD: But it is still on reruns!

AK: Yes,I have noticed that too- it is great that it continues on in reruns. However, do you think the conversation which the show started needs to continue?

AD: Now,which particular conversation are you talking about? (laughs) There were a lot of conversations going on around that show!

AK: I would say just the conversation about building bridges between the Islamic community and the mainstream community as well as portraying them(Muslims) in a normal light besides the typical terror headlines on the news!

AD: I think that it is kind of an international issue and not just a Canadian one. I think that portraying visible minorities -which I hate the word minorities anyways- but people of colour as just regular folks is important. Specifically, I think building bridges across cultures and exposing people to different cultures as opposed to what we see in the media and how things can be sensationalized is very important. Basically, there are radicals in every culture, but that is not the norm.

  •

AK: Exactly- It generally gives a human face to it all by showing the average person from each group.

AD: I think that’s very important because it’s a crazy world out there right now and I’m not going to blame all of the media, but things get blown out of proportion and people are taking a lot of sides as a result.

And everything is not black, white or extreme as the majority of people just want to go about their day and live their lives peacefully. And I think as opposed to going inside our homes, closing our doors, blocking ourselves out and segregating ourselves into groups, we should be trying to understand other cultures and how other people think. There really is such a level of xenophobia in the world right now and culture phobia so shows like Little Mosque on the Prairie and Diggstown are exposing us to the heartbeat of what is going on in other cultures.

AK: Exactly-it’s really allowing us to get to know one another!

AD: Yes, thank you for putting into simpler words (laughs)

I think Little Mosque started a conversation in that direction while it was on the air -and it is still on the air- but when it first came out!It was such a radical show in that it was a comedy that made people laugh but learn something at the same time.It truly opened up their eyes and hearts at the same time.

AK: Exactly and it really built a good bridge. What other impact do you think it has had on Canadian culture?

AD: Well, I think I kind of said it in that it did open up people eyes! I think the more people are exposed to other cultures as opposed to closing the borders and walling ourselves off and etc. (Laughs) …You know where I am going with that…

AK: Yes (laughs)

AD: I think the conversation changes the more that we are open to each other and learning from each other as opposed to living in fear!

AK: Exactly-the more we are familiar we are with each other the more it helps! That is great. So, looking back on the show, do you have any favorite memories you can share either on screen or off screen?

AD: Some of my favorite? Well, of course my bathing suit was a favorite(laughs)

AK: That’s a classic one (Laughs)

AD: One of my favs! (-laughs)

AK: I know-that was actually one of my favorite too-  you’d never think you would see that-(laughs)

AD: I mean there were so many favorite moments and so many highlights -it was a great cast. Another one that I enjoyed was when Fatima did not believe in her worth and she thought just running a café wasn’t important work when one of her friend’s,who she had gone to school with, was working with the United Nations and really making a name for herself in the world while she was just running a café in an unknown place in Saskatchewan. She closed up the café and sat out in the park to think what she was going to do with her life and perhaps thinking about running away.Eventually, everybody from the café started asking her questions until she had all the customers from the café sitting around and she goes “oh”!That was one of my favorite episodes and it was great!

AK: I know – the great thing about the show is it that it shows the sense of the community they had which was really powerful.

AD: Right … So many things like that happened and everybody had their highlighting moments but those were the ones that really touched me.

AK: Yes, they really do stand out. And  let’s talk about the Canadian entertainment industry briefly. So, Netflix recently announced they are opening up a production hub in Toronto .

AD: Yes, that’s interesting- I don’t know much about it…but.

AK: So, they are going to be creating over 850 jobs each year for Canadian talent –so that’s a great thing because it really creates Canadian productions for Netflix and opens up so many doors  for our talent…

AD: So, when you are saying 850 jobs are you saying 850 productions , between casts, or 850  jobs?Because I know the entertainment industry is such a money making industry in general and there are so many layers from the  hotels to   the food to the wardrobe  to transportation  and  etc., etc.

AK: Yes, it is very diverse with the layers such as production and transport but mainly  for talent…

AD: Oh, that’s great to hear-the more opportunities, the better !

AK: Exactly and then at the same they have been criticized for not collecting or remitting in federal or provincial taxes, but what do you think generally….  ?

AD: Netflix? What are you talking about? Is that Netflix still?

AK: Yes, Netflix.

AD: Oh, you are talking about the online Netflix!

AK: Yes Netflix-they are opening up productions hubs but are they are also being criticized for not contributing to the Canada Media Fund and other…

AD: Well, I can’t really talk on that…

AK:Oh ok!

AD: But I do know for them to be opening up another production facility here in Ontario- I think that’s great. The more productions, the better!

And tax breaks are one thing but in the long run there will—like I as an artist  live in Ontario -I have to remit my taxes- transportation, the wardrobe designers, hotels and e.tc .Everything involved in –that’s just the tip of the iceberg-but everything involved that supports the entertainment industry also contributes to the taxes in Ontario

AK: Yes, that’s true – exactly- and they are opening so many doors that I think it’s such a worthwhile initiative .

AD: Yes!

AK: So, let’s talk about your career in general. You have over 80 acting credits so what advice would you give to people from minority groups and others in general who want to pursue a career in acting?

AD: Wow- that is a tough one and I get asked that a lot! I believe that you can’t give up. Do not give up! If this is something that you really want to do, continue to pursue it. I really believe in the 10,000 hours thing- to learn as much as you can in your field as an actor even if it means going to one of the schools like Sheridan, Randolph, George Brown, Ryerson or even being taught by private teachers and coaches.

The more you learn, the more of a skillset you have to compete because it is a very competitive industry. My advice would be to always keep your skills as sharp as possible and to be always open to learn.

And never think that you know everything because you can always learn! And the industry is changing all the time and I find that older artists are afraid to try and embrace new technologies …. I remember these young kids came up to me and approached me a couple of years ago…. when it was just starting out… to do a thing called a web series and I’m like “What’s a web series”? (laughs)Is it something like a little thing on YouTube? That’ll be fun!”.

We won all kinds of awards for this show called Teenagers and I have done a couple of web series since then!Web series have become another outlet and another medium- we have to be open to embracing these new mediums!

AK: That is great –I know it’s so exciting and challenging all at the same time.

AD: Yeah because there are people who say” I only do theatre”–Well that’s very nice! Or they say” I only do film or I only do commercials”! You can’t only do one thing in Canada unless you have another side gig- so you have to be open to try new things and to do as much  in  as many different mediums as you can.

AK: Exactly because it is a small industry so you need to diversify as much as you can.

And if you want to branch out to go to another industry in another country they are always surprised and say “Oh you are well versed and you can do this, you can do film and you can do theatre!   I’m like well yeah, we kind of have to do that in Canada which is why we are so proficient in all these different things!

AK: Exactly –it’s like top notch!

AD: Yes!

AK: So, what else can we look forward to seeing you in in the for the future?

AD: Well let’s cross our fingers and see what happen for Diggstown for any future seasons.I have been guest starring on different shows, though they don’t let you talk about things until they air these days! It’s kind of related to NDA’s and whatever! However,I am managing to keep busy!I did a workshop at the beginning of the year for an upcoming opera.I have been doing all kind of concerts and singing at events!

AK: That’s exciting! So,do you have any message for fans who have been following your career?

AD: Do I have any message?Wow.Thank you!Thank you for supporting. Thanks for watching what I do and I hope that you continue. I am very grateful for that kind of support

AK: Of course, and we definitely will.We are so excited to see what you will be doing next.It was great chatting with you today!

AD: Thank you! Good talking to you!

Interview With Derek McGrath From CBC’s Kim’s Convenience and Little Mosque on the Prairie

22 03 2019

DEREK McGRATH is an award winning actor who has enjoyed a distinguished career in the theatre,on television and in the movies. In the theatre,he has countless credits including YOU’RE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN, GODSPELL,HOUSE OF BLUE LEAVES,THE  SECOND CITY, ALLADIN and ARMAGEDDON OUT OF HERE which he co-wrote with WENDY JEWELL and for which he received a DRAMALOGUE award for acting.

Probably best known to American TV fans as ANDY ANDY on CHEERS,he has also gained notoriety for his work on such shows as DALLAS, WHO’S THE BOSS, 9 TO FIVE, STARTREK,WALKER TEXAS RANGER, DOC,SUITS and many, many others. Canadian audiences may remember him as Reverend Magee on LITTLE MOSQUE ON THE PRAIRIE.He is currently delighting audiences as FRANK, on the CBC show KIM’S CONVENIENCE.

MR. McGRATH has appeared on the big screen as well starring in CHARLIE BARTLETT and the remake of the seventies horror classic CARRIE starring JULIANNE MOORE.

He currently lives on a farm in Central Ontario where he enjoys playing his guitar and composing his own songs and where he and his friends DAVID KEMKER, WENDY JEWELL and SLATER JEWELL KEMKER shot the horror comedy ZOMBIE DEAREST. Mr. McGrath plays UNCLE PETE, a chicken loving, alcoholic, hat hating grouch.

With McGrath being kind enough to participate in an interview with me and with Kim’s Convenience quickly progressing through its third season, it is an opportune time to reconnect with the actor on his role and involvement with the show , his take on its impact on Canadian culture, to get his insights on the impact of Little Mosque on the Prairie , his take on the state of the Canadian entertainment industry and so much more!

Take a read through below!

Abbas Karimjee Let’s talk about your appointment to the role of Frank on Kim’s Convenience. Could you please walk us through this process and did you think that Kim’s Convenience would be success it is today when you first read the script?

Derek McGrath: My appointment to the role of Frank came about in the way that most of my roles come about, I auditioned with a bunch of other actors and got cast. I remember being a little concerned about the big bushy beard you are familiar with if you’ve seen me in the show; big bushy beard was not part of the character description in the breakdown. The producers tell me I convinced them that a big bushy beard would be great for the character. It did cost me a role in a movie I was cast in when they insisted a shave it or they would recast. I refused and they recast. I don’t regret it.

AK: The character of Frank comes across as an oddball who rambles from one topic to another, much to the dismay of Mr. Kim. What experience have you been able to draw on personally, from your acting, personal experience or anything else to help you portray such an unconventional character?

DM:There are people out there I have described as “aggressively boring. I’m sure you’ve met your own version of this type; nowadays they’re all over twitter…”I made some eggs today; ;they were pretty good but not quite perfect , I like them soft but not too runny and these were just a bit on the runny side; tried putting them back for a while but that never quite works…blah, blah, blah and blah blah blah and blah blah blah”.

Years ago,I met a guy at what was then THE MONTREAL,great little jazz bar.He had been to see me at SECOND CITY. He cornered me and started talking, and talking and talking. I remember thinking, when he takes a breath I’ll find an excuse to get away from him but he never did take that breath;it was a horrible dilemma. I finally just butted in and said “I gotta go.” Frank is like that guy except that Frank is livable because he has a big heart and actually has his own kind of wisdom.

AK: Are there any other challenges which you have had to overcome to play Frank?

DM: Precision; what makes Frank funny does not really come from joke lines. It’s all based on character and timing. Paul and I agree on this, that our scenes together have to be very precise. Not over played or under played and again timing, timing and timing.

AK: What else can we expect from the current season of Kim’s Convenience, both for Frank and in general?

DM: What comes next for the show and for Frank? I haven’t got a clue, which is kind of exciting. It’s always fun to read the new script and find out for the first time to see what’s up with both.

AK: What are some of your other favorite on screen and off-screen moments from working on the show?

DM: There is a moment in the first episode I ever did when Kim is berating Frank for being so boring and he tells Frank to tell these stories to his wife maybe she can put up with them when Frank goes very quiet and looks like a sad puppy dog and tells Frank that his wife left him 6 months ago. It doesn’t seem like it should be funny but Frank just looked so pathetic that Paul kept breaking up. I think it was the moment Paul and I fell in love with working together, always good when that happens your first day on the set with the star of the show.

AK: How do you think Kim’s convenience represents Canada’s multiculturalism and what do you think the fact that this is a Canadian says about our country?

DM: It seems like every race on the planet is represented on the show and it’s not just a token African or a token black or a token Indian here and there. Kim and family are intertwined with all of these other cultures and they are a main part of many of the story lines. Shannon who is white, has the hots for John; there is the romance between Janice and the black cop. There is Kim’s friend Mr. Mehta etc. etc. etc. I don’t know of any other show that features so much diversity. I also like the easy way the show handles stereotypes vs. actual cultural differences. Mr. Kim says so many things that could be offensive but represent attitudes that need to be aired and he makes these stereotypes so ridiculous that we find them laughable; I think that’s an invaluable tool for watering down the fears and clichés that trouble too many of us. There’s an old swathing that criminal lawyers say, “If they’re laughing, they ain’t hanging.”

AK: What value do you see in having diverse communities represented in mainstream television?

DM: It is obvious to me that diversity broadens our spectrum and opens us up to a richer experience of life. A diverse society is a much more interesting society and much more fun. If every house in your town is a three-bedroom pink bungalow, life gets pretty damn boring.

Look at the food choices we have in Toronto; I tell people, “if you can’t eat well in Toronto, you’re stupid.” And then there is all the different kinds of music you can listen to here. And it all intermingles, Algerian Rock, African folk, reggae, French music, Italian music, aboriginal chanting; it all adds spices to the big pot of soup that we get to savor in this great multicultural city we call Toronto, (a native American name).

AK: Let’s discuss Little Mosque on the Prairie briefly. What impact do you think Little Mosque on the Prairie as had on Canadian culture and was the show successful, in your opinion, in its efforts to build bridges?

DM: I think there is nothing more unjust than bigotry, guilty without any recourse, no culpable action or any action at all for that matter required. NO defense of any kind accepted. Anything that mitigates such an ignorant attitude is a positive. As Canadians, we tend to be a little more inclusive than many places in the world …or at least we’re politer about it. Definitely feel we need to keep the conversation going.

I remember sitting around with some farmers the year Mosque premiered and someone at the table said something along the lines of “Oh; you’re gonna be in that Muslim show, better check your basement for bombs.” That was the attitude of too many people I know. But after the show began airing, that same guy said he’d seen last night’s episode and thought it was great “Baber was so funny on the lawn mower.” You could see he really loved the character of Baber, a Muslim. “If they’re laughing they ain’t hanging.” I think shows featuring ethnic characters make the members of whatever race is depicted a little more human and that’s big. “Hey, they’re just like me.”

McGrath as the beloved Reverend Duncan McGee on CBC’s internationally renowned sitcom, Little Mosque on the Prairie. McGrath looks backs on the show’s impact and the importance of continuing to share its message in our current times.

AK: Let’s chat briefly about the Canadian entertainment industry. Netflix recently announced that they are opening up production hubs in Toronto, which will in turn create 1850 jobs every year for Canadian talent. At the same time, there have been criticisms of Netflix not being involved in collecting or remitting federal and provincial taxes.  As an actor what is your response to Netflix’s decision to open up hubs here and how it might shape the industry?

DM: Look, we don’t ride to town in a horse and buggy anymore. The industry has to evolve to be relevant in today’s world. Many people argued that ROMA should not have won an academy award because it wasn’t really a movie because it never aired in a movie theatre. Nonsense. It had everything that a movie has, a character, lighting costumes, beginning, middle and end. AND, with today’s obsession with blockbusters, it may never have had a release if it hadn’t been for NETFLIX. Admittedly, I don’t like the near monopoly Netflix has enjoyed for several years, I do think that’s on the verge of changing; other companies, DISNEY for instance are jumping into the live streaming market. If NETFLIX continues to bring quality production to the screen and they want to bring 1850 jobs to Toronto, they are completely welcome as far as I’m concerned. Do pay your taxes though fellas.

AK: You have led a notable and distinguished career, having attained over 112 acting credits. What advice do you have to offer youth who are aspiring to pursue a career in the entertainment industry in Canada and what do you attribute your success to?

DM: As for advice for young actors, the business has changed so much since I started out I’m not sure I have any idea what I could say that would help. Maybe this at least; as the boy scouts say BE PREPARED. If you have an audition, make sure you not only know the lines but you have internalized them. You don’t want to be over rehearsed because you lose your energy and your spontaneity but worse still I think to be underprepared; if you’re struggling for lines, it’s pretty hard to get into the flow of the scene. Also, don’t play it too safe. Commit and go for it; let the auditioned know you’ve got something in the tank; they’ll pull you back if it’s too much; and lastly, don’t listen too much to anyone including me. Trust your intuition.

As to what do I attribute to my success to. Well, for one thing, to be honest, I’m a pretty good actor and I prepare and my auditions reflect that. But maybe just as importantly, I have a reputation for being good to work with; no ego strips and cantankerous fits on the set. And I have a record of delivering, probably most important of all. One other thing; I think I show the humanity of the characters I play…even if they’re jerks.

AK: What are some other upcoming projects viewers can look forward to seeing you in?

DM: Well, I’ve been asked about my availability for some new episodes of KIM’S CONVENIENCE, pretty stoked about that, love playing Frank. And I’ve just finished shooting a movie called THE MARIJUANA CHRONICLES about a study of their effects of marijuana conducted back in the early seventies when Pierre Trudeau was considering legalizing it’s use. The Addiction Research foundation funded the study but they had an agenda and they didn’t like the findings off the field study so they buried the project. It’s a great story and I’m really happy to be part of it.

AK: What message do you have to fans have been following your career?

DM: I have some fans who have been following my career for years and believe me,it’s a real comfort to hear from them from time to time. You like to know you’re having an effect out there and a few kind words from a fan is really encouraging. Also, without them, I wouldn’t have a career so my message is THANK YOU

AK:What some hobbies you enjoy in your spare time?

In my spare time, I play guitar and I write and perform my own songs. Also, I have recently taking up axe throwing which is incredibly satisfying, and yes, sometimes frustrating, But I love it.

A big thank you to Derek for participating in the interview!

Interview With Mr. D’s Mark Forward

23 11 2013

Mr. Leung

Mark Forward has led a reputable career within the Canadian entertainment industry as both a comedian and actor.

The talented actor was  born and raised in Oakville. He achieved his first notable success in 2005 when he  earned his position as a finalist in the Phil Hartman Awards and the  2005 Canadian Comedy Award-winner for Best Stand-up Newcomer.

Subsequent  to his initial success, in 2006  Forward   participated in the Just For Laugh Gags program in which he  won the Canadian Homegrown  Comic Competition as well as the Halifax Comedy Festival for which he recently made his third appearance.

Forward has  also earned his reputation from appearances on notable TV programs and commercials including ,Degrassi:The New Generation,  The Newsroom and Doc. Furthermore his appearances include series such as TMN’S  Living in Your Car and the popular  life time series, The Double Wedding.

Mark’s involvement with the on the Jon Dor Television show ‘a’s writing staff  led to him being bestowed the  Canadian Comedy Award in 2008 for Writing on a TV Series.

For the past 3 years, Mark has also been working on CBC’S hit sitcom, Mr. D as the peculiar and often hostile  and unstable librarian,Mr. Leung. With the show approaching its debut date for season 3 and Mark willing to chat for a brief interview, we discuss a variety of aspects related to his involvement with the series.

Read the complete interview with Mark Forward below.

Abbas Karimjee:Lets start by discussing how you were appointed to the role of Leung. Did you audition or were you contacted? Could you please walk us through this initial process, with reference to your overall reactions?

Mark Forward:Well, I started in the writers room. At first, they were interested in me playing the Role of Dwyer, which Maestro Fresh Wes now plays so well. When that didn’t pan out, I was then offered the role of the Librarian. Which at that point, had none of the crazy and fun stuff that Leung now entails. I’m glad it worked out his way in the end, I mean, who would want to play a cruel and strange slightly Chinese Librarian.

AK:How have you related to the character of the Leung?

MF:I don’t think anyone can relate with Leung.

AK:This season   Leung and Lisa had  quite  a few negative encounters as a  result of Leung’s hatred for Lisa as evidenced from  various instances including  explicit  comments expressing his disgust towards her despite her attempts to develop a friendship. Why do you think Leung feels this way and how would you like to see this relationship   develop in the coming season?

MF:Well in season two we explored this, and it was revealed that Leung felt thought Lisa might have been in love with him.

AK:With Mr.D approaching its third season, what are you able to reveal about what is in store for the show’s third season as well as for the character of Leung?

MF:Well, it’s a toss up between, One, He purchases a Camel, named Walter. It only has six weeks to live, and he must get it to South America, where a camel doctor has the only medicine that can save him. Or Two, more library stuff and interacting with Gerry.

AK:Since Little Mosque on the Prairie , Mr. D has  achieved record breaking ratings for CBC.Why do you think the show resonates  with such a large audience?

MF:I think Gerry has a huge following through out his career, and does really well on the show. And I think the writing team (not bias) is really great and care about the project.

AK:Do you think Mr D is reflective of Canadian culture, particularly  through the way in which it explores some of its  primary themes  such as the presence  of  unqualified teachers  within the educational system, relationships amongst   staff members as well as how staff  relate to students and e.t.c? How exactly do you feel the way these themes  are conveyed actually reflect Canadian culture?

MF:I have no idea, nor am I going to pretend I do. I think its a fun show, I have no idea if it reflects anything, or anywhere.

AK:What are your most favorite moments from Mr. D , either on screen or offscreen.

MF:Love working with Jon Torrens, it’s always so fun. One of the nicest people you will ever meet. And so fun to be on set with. When we have scenes together, I rarely can keep a straight face.

AK.What message do you have for fans of  Mr D?

MF:Make sure to separate your garbage.

AK:Have you been  working on any other projects which you would  like to share with readers?

MF:I will be appearing on John Oliver’s New York Stand up Show on Comedy Central. And just finished a movie with Alison Brie, Colin Hanks and Justin Chatwin called “No Stranger than Love” directed by Nick Wernham.

CBC Announces Debut Date For Season 3 of Mr. D

31 10 2013

mr d season 4

CBC has  announced that the third season of Mr. D will debut on Monday, February 24 2014 @ 9:00pm. The third season shall consist of a mere 8 episodes in order to accommodate the airing of the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Though little has been revealed about the coming season, it was disseminated in an earlier report   that the  third season will have fewer  guest stars  in contrast to previous seasons as it will have a more intensive focus on the show’s main cast. Particularly,  the coming season will   focus on the story lines surrounding Gerry’s increased duties as  substitute  teacher for  physical education, a subject which he is actually qualified to teach. As the show is based on Gerry’s real life experiences as a teacher, it makes sense that we would begin to explore a greater  depth of story lines involving his character as a gym teacher since the vast majority of his real life teaching experiences was as a  phys ed teacher.
What specific story-lines would you like to see explored and what is your specific reaction/response to the fact that there will be a greater increase in story lines pertaining to Gerry’s involvement with physical education at Xavier Academy? Do you think the style and approach  of Gerry’s teaching as a physical education teacher  will be somewhat more professional and organized  in contrast to his teaching style  seen as a social studies teacher, given that he is actually qualified to teach  Gym?What other changes do you hope to see be apart of the third  season? Share your response in the comment section below.

Interview With Mr. D’s Bette MacDonald

23 10 2013

BetteMacDonald-gallery-thumb-638xauto-253647

Bette MacDonald

Bette MacDonald has been leading a distinguished and successful career within the Canadian entertainment industry  on TV, radio and on stage performances for over 20 years.

Bette’s active involvement within the industry is evident from notable  tasks which she has undertaken such as  appearing at the Canadian Winnipeg Comedy festival as well as  working alongside Symphony Nova Scotia. The latter of the two performances was  such a success that she was brought back for an unexpected yet highly appreciated  two night encore presentation.

For the past five years, Bette and her husband, Maynard Morrision have been working on a holiday special known as “Tis The Season ” with  it having  been critically acclaimed and it has been selling out major halls since its inauguration. The production was in-fact such a success that it has consistently received standing ovations.

More recently, the actress has been starring as the tough yet  kind-hearted secretary,  Trudy Walsh in CBC’S hit sitcom Mr.D. With the show having been renewed for a third season and  the actress being kind enough  to participate in an interview with me  we  extensively discuss her involvement with the show. Particularly, we discuss aspects of how she has related to her character, how thew character of Trudy interacts with other characters on the show as well as what is in store for the third season of Mr. D. The delightful actress also reflects on the success of  Mr. D as well as the other projects which she has been working on.

Read through the complete interview below.

Abbas Karimjee:Lets start by discussing your appointment to the role of Trudy. Were you contacted or did you audition? Could you please walk us through this initial process?

Bette MacDonald:Sure Abbas.  I was contacted by producer, Mike Volpe who told me about the show idea and the character.  He said that both he and Gerry thought that I would be right for the part, so they asked me to read for it.  I’m so glad it worked out.

AK:How have you related to the character of Trudy?

BM:Well, I love playing this character.  Love it. Trudy doesn’t suffer fools, she speaks her mind and she has a great sense of style (thank you Martha Curry for the best wardrobe ever!)  I believe that when she’s not working, Trudy is living a fabulous life that her colleagues may never learn about.  Maybe she’ll be George Clooney’s new girlfriend!

AK:What challenges have you had to overcome to portray the character of Trudy?

BM:I don’t find the character challenging.  I understand her and I probably shouldn’t say this but I think Trudy and I are similar in some ways.  Oh Dear.

AK:Trudy takes great pleasure in competing with and tormenting  Robert as evidenced in various ways such as when they were competing for a gift to buy Callaghan.  How do you think Trudy feels about Robert  and how would you describe the two’s working relationship?

Trudy and Robert

MacDonald comments on how Robert’s big plans for the school does not sit well with Trudy, but how Trudy also deeply cares for the character as well.

BM: It’s very likely that Trudy has been at the school a lot longer than Robert.  He probably came to the school with a big attitude and big plans which, needless to say, would not sit well with Trudy.  In her heart of hearts, I believe she cares for Robert.  There are moments when she feels sorry for him.  Poor Robert.  Such a knob.  The fact that Robert is played by the freakishly talented and darling Jonathan Torrens makes those scenes a joy to perform.  I just love working with him.

AK:Trudy does not tolerate Gerry’s incompetence as seen from how she  reminds of him  of his responsibility to perform basic tasks, such as completing attendance and  handing  in forms. How would you describe the two’s working relationship and how do you think Trudy’s no nonsense attitude with Gerry speaks to her personality?

BM:Trudy will not tolerate any kind of disruption of her perfect system.  She is the type of gal who, by night is probably the life of the party but by day runs a well oiled machine of her making.  She probably has a system that has been working perfectly for years and here comes Gerry who will have to learn the hard way, that forms must be filled in and returned immediately!  Poor Gerry has to learn everything the hard way, doesn’t he.

AK:Trudy  often gets irritated when she feels as though she is being undervalued as the mere secretary at Xavier academy such as when Lisa put on a show  on secretary appreciation day which suggested that her main role was  as the coffee lady for the principal. How do you feel Trudy  generally feels she is viewed by her colleagues , in terms of how she contributes to the overall operation of Xavier academy. How do you feel that the way she views  the treatment she receives from others impacts her relationships with the staff members, in general?

BM:It was so hard to play angry while those sweet, lovely kids were doing their little play.  I had a hard time not cracking up.  Poor Lisa, her intentions are so good.  It’s in the execution that she has some trouble.  Trudy runs a tight ship.  She’s aware of everything that goes on at the school.   I’ve heard that every school has someone, usually a secretary, who has the keys to all the locks, who knows where the bodies are buried, who must not be crossed….. at Xavier, that person is Trudy.  I believe her colleagues learn that Trudy is not to be messed with.

AK:This past season we have seen Trudy and Lisa develop a friendship of sorts  as seen by how they spent time  after work. Why do you think they have connected together  and grow would you like to see this develop?

BM:Trudy feels sorry for Lisa.  She’s a sweet girl who tries too hard.  Trudy first started going out for the odd drink with Lisa because she likes drinks so much but eventually she began to like her.  Trudy is kind, I think but one should never mistake kindness for weakness.  Especially not in the case of Trudy Walsh.

AK:What are you able to tell us about what might be in store for the coming season of Mr D, both for the show in general as well as  specifically for the character of Trudy?

BM:This season, we laughed more, had a harder time getting through scenes without cracking up.  This season is the funniest of the three.  The characters have developed even further, their relationships are more intricate and the writing, which has always been wonderful, continues to get stronger.  I laugh out loud when I read these scripts.  The character Gerry is revealing some very interesting layers while continuing to be hilarious.  The real Gerry is hilarious and knows exactly what he wants this show to be.  He has maintained from the beginning that he wants the show to be real and as funny as it can be.  He has been very successful.  Right on Gerry!

AK:What are some of your favourite memories from working on the show thus far , either onscreen  or offscreen?

BM:There are many.  I love working with these people.  It begins with Gerry who is an extraordinarily funny and kind man.  The cast is a group of talented actors and comedians who love to work.  They will do whatever it takes to serve the scene.  The best memories so far involve doing scenes that are so funny that you spend your entire work day laughing.  In this season I was in a scene that is the funniest thing I’ve ever been a part of.  I can’t say what it is but when  you see it, you’ll know what I mean.  It’s the actor I share the scene with who makes  it so funny.  The kids in this cast are very talented and mature, far more mature than many of the “adult” actors.  We have so much fun with them.  And without them, we sometimes meet in a local pub after a day of shooting.  Love those nights and hope to have many more.

AK:Mr D has achieved record-breaking ratings on CBC  since the debut of CBC’S hit sitcom, Little Mosque on the Prairie with the series premiere earning a 1.3 million rating. Why do you think the show resonates with such a large audiences?

BM:Everyone can relate to this show.  We’ve all had the school experience.  There is a big teacher following, of course.  It’s a liberating thing to be able to laugh at some of the absurdity that the educational atmosphere can create and to know that you are not the only one who sees it and understands it.  More importantly, perhaps, is that the show is so funny and smart.  This show doesn’t talk down to the audience.  Everything is not spelled out, we know our audience is bright and is along for the ride.  There is an old theatre expression, “If it’s not on the page, it’s not on the stage,” so we cannot overstate the importance of the writing team.  They are some of the best in the business.

AK:What message do you have for fans of the show, with MR.D approaching its third season?

BM:Well, first of all, I want to thank them for tuning in week after week.  I can say, without reservation, that season 3 is the funniest yet.  We are extremely fortunate to be able to work in this business and we don’t take that for granted.  We know how valuable the audience is and we can’t wait for them to see what’s coming!

AK:Are you working on other acting projects which you would like to share with readers?

BM:Yes!  I am currently writing our holiday show that we tour in December.  It began as a one nighter and we are now going into our seventh tour.  I’m also writing and preparing for a show that I’ll be doing in March with Symphony Nova Scotia.  This will be my third show with them.  I love working with them.  They are superb musicians and lovely people.  We take a very interactive approach.  It’s challenging and horrifying in many ways but I love it!

Thank you for asking me these questions.  I love talking about Mr. D.!

Season 3 of Mr. D to Debut in March 2014

1 09 2013

CBC has advised the blog  that the third season of Mr. D  will likely debut post  winter 2014 Olympics.

Naomi Snieckus has issued a statement via  Twitter which  seems to confirm  this outcome stating that  the  upcoming third season  will debut in March 2014.

While an exact date has not been established at this time, the CBC  has advised us that a final date will likely be set by October 2013.

The third season of Mr. D will consist of 8 episodes and will focus heavily on  storylines surrounding the main characters, with particular focus on the character of Gerry Dee. The character will  begin to have opportunities to teach physical education, a course he is actually qualified to teach as opposed to merely teaching social studies of which he has little knowledge about.

Interview With Mr D’s Naomi Snieckus

14 08 2013

Naomi Snieckus has been leading a distinguished and diverse career in the Canadian entertainment industry.Indeed, she has written for various series such as Trish Stratus‘ Walk of Fame and Nelly Furtado’s The Junos. The experienced actress has also made appearances on a variety of prominent Canadian series such as Little Mosque on the Prairie, Ron James Show, Being Erica, Wingin’ It, as well as the popular children series  Cat in the Hat and Franklin where she voiced the role of aunt turtle.

Sniekus  has also created, written and acted in the web series, The CastingRoom.biz.The actress has also appeared in the Martin Short Special, I MartinShort and won the CCA 2010 award for best female improviser. The extraordinary actress also serves as the founding member of the Canadian award winning troupe,The National Theatre of the World.com.

More recently,Naomi has been involved with CBC’S hit sitcom,Mr. D where for the past two seasons, she has been portraying the tough and authoritative yet highly respected gym teacher,Bobbi.

With Mr D approaching its third season and Naomi willing to participate in a interview with me,  we discuss the ways in which she has related to the character, Bobbi’s previous storylines in the recent second season  with her  on and off again boyfriend ,Craig and her working relationship with the character of Gerry  as well as her reflections on the success of Mr. D.

Furthermore, we discuss  the extent to which Mr. D reflects truths about   aspects of the Canadian educational system, other projects the actress is involved in as well as much more.

Read through the complete interview below!

Abbas Karimjee: Lets start by discussing your appointment to the role of  Bobbi. Were you contacted or did you audition? Could you please walk us through this initial process?

Naoimi Snieckus:I was at the original table read for the FIRST pilot at CBC. After that I still had to audition for the pilot, which I did. I remember I had to bring my dogs to the audition – probably helped me keep my cool –  I did the audition and then forgot about the part. I was visiting my mother a little while later and got “the call” that I was flying to Halifax the next day to shoot the pilot – not as exotic as flying to Los Angeles – but I was still VERY excited!

AK:How have you related to  the character of Bobbi?

NS:I like Bobbi’s “no-nonsense” approach to things and I’m VERY good at sports. Oh..and I too always wear a whistle but it’s just an accessory really.

AK:What are some of the challenges you have had  to overcome in portraying the character of Bobbi?

NS:I’m used to wearing very high heels and pencil skirts every day in normal life – plus I like to spend 2-3 hours doing my hair and make up. Playing Bobbi- I wear track suits and put my hair in a pony tail….it’s VERY challenging to find a way of spending those extra hours.

AK:You have worked on both animated productions such as Franklin and Cat in the Hat as well as  set productions such  as  Mr. D. Which type of acting do you prefer and why?

NS:I love that in my career I get to do a little bit of everything – I also have an improv company called The National Theatre of the World (www.thenationaltheatreoftheworld.com) so being able to perform live helps me keep my comedy muscles strong.

AK:Bobbi and Gerry have had their differences clearly displayed through various episodes ,  including how she refused to hire him for a gym teaching position  when there was an opening and more recently in the finale,  passing him down for a chance to  lead a  senior boys basketball team at Xavier Academy. We have also seen numerous instances when Bobbi has taken great pleasure in  deceiving and teasing Gerry.-How do you think Bobbie feels about Gerry and why do you think this  is the case? Generally, how would you describe the two’s working relationship?

Snieckus

Snieckus discusses her character’s atypical on again off again relationship with her boyfriend, Craig as well as her difficult working relationship with her colleague, Gerry Dee.

NS:They are like Scully and Mulder, Sony and Cher, 2 of the 3 Stooges – they HAVE to work together but it’s challenging. At least they speak a common language – sports – they’ll always have that…they’ll always have the courts.

AK:This past season we see Bobbi’s   hostile and somewhat oppressive interactions with her  on and off again boyfriend, Craig. What do you think the character’s behavior  with Craig speaks to her personality and how would you like to see the two’s relationship develop in the coming season?

NS:I think the writers wrote some great stuff for Bobbi and Craig – I mean, he’s an ACTUAL Calvin Klein Model – it’s a fantastic bit of comedy that those two would ever be together. As far as Season 3 and where things go…I can’t speak about that, I’ve been sworn to secrecy! There’s definitely some surprises in store for Bobbi!

AK:With Mr. D approaching its third season, what are you able to tell us about what might be in store , both for the show in general as well as  for character of Bobbi in particular?

NS:HA…nice try, I still can’t tell you about Season 3…you’re going to have to tune in…but let’s just say Bobbi and Gerry wrestle some big ideas together!

AK: What are your favorite onscreen or off-screen memories, thus far, from working on Mr D?

NS:We have so much fun on and off screen. The cast and directors we’ve had keep our set really fun so that even when the camera ISN’T rolling we’re still having laughs.

AK: Mr D has achieved record-breaking ratings on CBC  since the debut of CBC’S hit sitcom, Little Mosque on the Prairie with the series premiere earning a 1.3 million rating. Why do you think the show resonates with such a large audiences?

NS:I think everyone can relate to this show cause we’ve all been taught by teachers like Gerry, or Lisa, or Simon, or Bobbi – and there’s a lot of teachers that see themselves in the show.

AK:How do you think the show’s depiction of how staff members relate to one another as well as to the student and parent body is representative of real life interactions within the Canadian  educational system?

NS:Because the writing is based largely on Gerry’s real life job as a teacher – everything has a level of truth to it. I love that about this show.

AK:You have appeared in a variety of Canadian series  including Little Mosque on the Prairie,Ron James Show, Being Erica and Wingin’ It, Why do you think viewers should take an interest in Canadian  programming and particularly, what value, in general, does Canada’s diverse programming offer?

NS:I think there is great TV being made in Canada –both in comedy and drama. If we want to continue to grow as an industry it has to be supported by our country. There’s so many ways of having your voice, your opinion heard about these shows on social network- so I think we should talk about it as much as possible. Folks like you are helping for sure!

AK:What message do you have for fans of the show, with Mr. D approaching season 3?

NS:If you like to laugh, you should watch…if you don’t like to laugh…what is WRONG with you?

AK:What activities do you participate in during your spare time?

NS:Running The National Theatre of the World (with my partner Matt Baram) keeps me really busy. We have regular shows in Toronto (I Seen You on TV the last Wed of every month at The Drake) and tour internationally. We are also part of the upcoming YYComedy Festival in Calgary (www.yycomedy.ca).We’ve been a company for 5 years now and we’re working on pitching our own TV shows presently. We have a residency at Soulpepper Theatre so we are doing improv shows there (like The Script Tease Project) and hosting an upcoming international improv festival in December. www.thenationaltheatreoftheworld.com @the_NTOW.

Gerry Dee Discusses Season 3 of Mr. D

4 08 2013

Indeed, details on the impending third season of  CBC’S  hit sitcom, Mr D have emerged  through a report from Metro Halifiax.

Producer and star , Gerry Dee   commented on the growth in the overall quality and type of storytelling that would be seen in the coming season. “We’re getting better at what we do, finding out where our mistakes might have been, and keep adjusting and tightening up the show”.

Further changes in the forthcoming season include its length which has been reduced from 13 episodes to a mere  8 episode season in order to accommodate the airing of the Winter 2014 Olympics.

Additionally, viewers can expect a more central  and intensive focus on the main cast  and Gerry starting to have opportunities to  teach  as a physical education teacher- quite a difference from the previous season which featured many guest stars such as Russell Peters and Arlene Duncan.

Mr D is based largely on Gerry’s own recollection of his teaching experiences of a decade, which includes 7  years as a physical education teacher and 3 years as a classroom teacher. To that effect, Gerry Dee has discussed how  the depth of his own experiences will impact  what viewers  will  see throughout the  entire course of the season.

“I’m running out of the classroom stories so I think you’ll see (the show) start to be a combination of P.E. and classroom material.”

Consequently, the third season will open with Gerry Dee substituting a gym class.

While a debut date for the show’s third season  has yet to be set,it will be posted to the blog as soon as  the details have been obtained.

What are your thoughts on seeing Gerry substitute as a  Gym teacher at various points throughout season? What types of storylines would you like to see  develop for both the classroom situations as well as for the gym classes? Share your  responses in the comments section.

Interview With Mr D’s Booth Savage

12 07 2013

mrd_callaghan_profile Booth Savage has been leading a distinguished career in the Canadian entertainment industry. Having  graduated with a MFA from York University in 1992, Savage went on to be apart of the Candor College Theatre faculty.

Various  additional accomplishments in his career include his attainment of Best Actor in a Leading Role” as Felix Batterinski in Alan King’s “The Last Season. He may be recognized  by  various viewers  for his  performance in the show , Canada Russia ’72, where he  portrayed the role of  the Team Canada head coach Harry Sinden in the CBC miniseries . Moreover,  as a member of the Toronto Free Theatre, Savage has performed in over 100 plays in every province and territory  with the exception of Yukon.

Also, for the past  two years Booth  Savage  has been portraying the role Principal  Mike Callaghan in CBC’S recent hit sitcom, Mr. D. With Mr , D approaching its this season and the Booth Savage  kindly agreeing to participate in a interview with me, we discuss various  aspects of how he has related to the character , his reflections on some of the storylines  in which Principal Callghan has been heavily  apart of  in the recent season ,the actor’s insight on how  his character interacts with the other characters on the show  as well as why he thinks Mr. D has attracted such a large audience along with much more.

Read through the complete interview below and share your thoughts on it in in the comments section section below.

Abbas Karimjee:Lets start by discussing your appointment to the role of Mr. Callaghan. Were you contacted or did you audition? Could you please walk us through this initial process?

Booth Savage:Gerry and I worked together in a TV movie (Canada Russia 72) he told me then that he was going to have his own sit com, and when it happened that he wanted me to be a part of it. I was happy to humour him. Getting a sit com to air is about as easy as getting your pants on without lifting your feet. Then, one day (2years later) I got a call from my agent telling me that indeed Gerry was green lit for a pilot and that I had an audition for the Principal. I didn’t get the part. The pilot was shot with another actor playing Callaghan, but the CBC declined to pick the show up for broadcast. More time passed, Gerry was given an opportunity to reshoot the pilot and this time my audition was more successful and I did get the part. Gerry is not only the funniest guy on television, but the perhaps the most honourable.

AK:How do you relate to the character of principal Callaghan? Essentially, in what ways are you similar and different to the character?

BS:That’s a tough question. Gerry might be in a better position to answer that one. He cast me, so there has to be a reason, some quality in me that rings true for him, as the show is based on his real life teaching experiences and colleagues. I enjoy playing Callaghan, and it is extremely satisfying to work and learn from such an outstanding group of very funny people. I am awed every day I am on set by their wit and generosity.

AK:Are there any resources or tools which you utilized in preparations evolved in portraying a Principal?

BS:I’ve been an actor for a very long time. I suppose that it is all those years of practice and discovery that inform my choices as Callaghan.

AK:This season we discover that Callaghan has an ex wife with somewhat        peculiar psychotic tendencies. What was your reaction in discovering this and would you like to see this particular storyline or any other aspects of his backstory explored within the coming season?

BS:I was thrilled to work with Linda Brooks. It was particularly satisfying for Callaghan to have met his match. But I’ve been working out all winter and look forward to the re-match.

AK: This season Callaghan’s sensitivity and concern for Xavier Zaademy and its various staff members was demonstrated in various ways. Notably, it was demonstrated in his interactions with his colleague, vice principal Robert in the season 2 finales where he  gave him a comical lesson to show him how he takes things too seriously as apart of his performance evaluation. How would you describe the two’s working relationship and based on this how do you feel it has developed from the show’s inauguration? How do you feel this demonstrates the manner in which he interacts with his subordinates, in general?

BS:Robert aka Jonathon Torrens is one of the most gifted people I have ever worked with. I (Booth) love him. Callaghan has another point of view. I enjoy my scenes with Robert immensely. It’s tough to stare him down because he is so completely funny and I have no defense against his lightning quick wit. There is no way I can hope to keep up with him. I just hang on for dear life and trust that he’s good enough to steer us both to the other shore.

AK:Callaghan has had to discipline Gerry on various instances for his comedic yet inappropriate mishaps. How do you feel Callaghan feels about Gerry and what do you think allows him to tolerate his lack of compliance?

BS:Callaghan seems to intuit that it takes all kinds of teachers and human beings to enrich the students at Xavier. I think, as a principal, one of Callaghan’s strengths is his ability to recognize that while Gerry may not be the most traditional teacher in the school, his humour and a genuinely good heart adds a value that otherwise would be missing from the school.

AK:Mr D is approaching its third season. What are you able to tell us about what might be in store for the upcoming season both for the show in general and particularly for the character of principal Callaghan?

BS:Sorry, I’m not in that loop. I’m looking forward to learning what’s up as much as anyone.

AK:Mr D has achieved record-breaking ratings on CBC   since the debut of CBC’S hit sitcom, Little Mosque on the Prairie with the series premiere earning a 1.3 million rating. Why do you think the show resonates with such a large audience?

BS:My guess is that most of the credit has to go to Gerry. He knew what it was he wanted to achieve from the very first script and he has remained true to that vision. Every once in a long while a creative energy emerges that resonates with a large audience and Gerry seems to possess that quality.

AK:You have led a distinguished career within the Canada entertainment industry. What advice do you have for those who aspire to pursue a career in acting?

BS:Be very sure. Be very committed. Be very flexible.

AK:What message do you have for viewers of Mr. D, with the show approaching its third season?

BS:Tell your friends. Write the CBC and tell them how much you like the show. Especially tell them how much you LOVE Callaghan.

AK:What hobbies do you enjoy during your spare time?

BS:I am currently learning all about hardwood flooring and its installation. As well, I love to travel. I love to read. And of course, both Callaghan and Savage love to work out.

Season 5 of Modern Family To Have New Opening Credits

11 07 2013

With  ABC’S  Modern Family approaching its upcoming  fifth  season and many of the  child cast members having grown and thus changed in appearance since the start of the show, viewers will have the chance to see a new opening credits.

According to the report from TV Guide, the  new scenes which show the current appearances of the actors will allow the audiences  to  view how the characters , particularly those who are juveniles, have grown since the start of the show.Presumably, this would  also be interesting given that the only cast members who had updated shots were  Jesse Tyler Ferguson[ Mitchell], Eric Stone Street and  Aubrey Anderson Emmons [ Lilly in season 3]

Executive producer Steven Leviton  commented on the  appropriate timing in changing the opening credits  Particularly, to that effect he stated that ‘Now that the kids have grown and we have baby Joe, it’s a good time to shoot a full new opening in front of the families’ homes,.

While Baby Joe will appear in the opening credits, it should be noted that the same baby will not be used to portray the character nor shall his age drastically increase in the coming season.

Are you excited to see the new opening credits?  Which character are you most intrigued to see in the opening credits?Sound off on your impressions and anticipations on this change in the comments section below.

Interview With Mr D’S Lauren Hammersley

1 04 2013

Lisa Mason

Actress, Lauren  Hammersley  has been emerging as a distinguished and effective   actress within the Canadian entertainment industry.  Having appeared in various series such as Single White Spenny ,Hammersley brings her  talents and energy to the role of  the sweet and innocent  teacher,  Lisa  in CBC’S hit sitcom Mr. D.

With Mr. D progressing through  its second season,  I  connect with Lauren to discuss her experiences working on the show,  insights into the development of her character as well  as her perspective on  why the show has had such a strong resonance with viewers.

Read through the complete interview with Lauren below.

Abbas Karimjee:When Mr D first launched,  Lisa presented herself as a very nervous teacher starting at Xavier Academy. Do you feel the character has developed since then and how so?

Lauren Hammersley :Lisa is less nervous and a bit more aware of where she stands in the school and socially.  Unfortunately, the more she speaks out, the more everything blows up in her face.  Aw, poor Lisa.

AK:How do you relate to the character of  Lisa?

LH:Not very much, actually.  She’s very sweet and innocent – but I’m outspoken and can be inappropriate at the best of times.  Maybe her enthusiasm – I have a hard time hiding my excitement which makes it difficult to be ‘cool’ about anything.  Yes.  I’m not cool.  That’s what we have in common.  Thank you for reminding me, Abbas.

AK:What  challenges  have been involved in portraying the role of Lisa?

LH:This is my first series, so there were a lot of learning curves.  I found it hard to feel funny as the ‘straight guy’ in a show surrounded by a lot of very talented comedians, but after watching it, I started to understand there was humor in Lisa’s straightness, in her ‘niceness’. When people are so mean to such a desperately nice character – it’s hilarious.

AK:Lisa attracted the attention of Gerry’s   roommate, Bill back in season 1 when he initially asked her on a date when they encountered each other at the school dance. Although she refused then , she recently showed  an interest in attending the poker game in   the episode,”Poker Night”   when she discovered Bill would be present. What do you think  is drawing  her to Bill and what are your  thoughts on the suitability of the two as a couple? What is your preference on this matter?

LH: I think Lisa needs to make some terrible life-altering decisions. Take her to the dark side: (rubs hands together maniacally) Yes…. she’ll like it there.

AK.What else is in store for Lisa and in the second season of Mr. D in general, with the season approaching its end?

LH: We’ll  have to wait and see, won’t we?  (I don’t think my NDA will let me tell you that)

AK:Lisa has a more tolerant   response to Gerry’s  antiques  than some of the other characters on the show. How would you describe the  two’s working relationship?

LH:. I think deep down Lisa admires Gerry’s caution to the wind approach to everything in life.  Secretly, I think she wishes she could be like that, even though he insults her 90% of the time.

AK: What are some of  your favorite moments from  Mr.D this season, either on-screen or off-screen?

LH:All of it.  I’m just so happy to be a part of it.  You can see why in our blooper reel:

AK:It has been previously reported that  Mr D brings attention  to the importance about under qualified teachers such as  the character of Gerry being responsible for educating today’s children about subjects which they know little about.  To what extent do to think Mr D raises awareness about this somewhat comical yet serious situation?

LH:  Hmmm… I haven’t seen those reports, but the majority of people who approach me to say they love the show are teachers.  I think it brings more of an awareness that teachers are humans.  Gerry’s playing a character of himself, in real life he was actually an awesome teacher (I’ve met a few of his past students and they’ve all said he was their favorite) and kids light up when they’re around him.  I’d imagine he is a bit of a hero to some in leaving a world of academia and pursue his dream of stand-up comedy.

AK:Mr D has achieved record-breaking ratings on CBC  since the debut of CBC’S hit sitcom, Little Mosque on the Prairie with the series premiere earning a 1.3 million rating. Why do you think the show resonates with such a large audiences?

LH:I hope they watch because it’s a funny show, but I think it’s relatable as well.  Everyone has known at least one or more teachers they can relate to in Xavier Academy.

AK:.What message do you have for the fans of Mr. D?

LH:You guys make the show – there wouldn’t be a show without you.  I know that sounds super cheesy and cliche, but it’s true.

AK:Are there any other acting projects you have been involved with, which you would like to share with  readers?

LH. No projects to speak of at the moment, but I do sell jewelry at http://www.etsy.com/shop/cheekyqueen.

Interview With The Office’s Jake Lacy

2 01 2013

jake lacy

Jake Lacy has been  leading an emerging career within the North American entertainment industry through his  work as an actor .Having  graduated from the North Carolina  school of the arts in 2008 Lacy went in production  with the Hartford Stage’s production of “A Midsummer Night’s  Summer Dream”.

In addition to performing in other theatre productions, Jake Lacy later starred in several episodes of the popular series Better With You in which he stared as the character of Cassey  and  also later  appearing  as Jimmy Goodwin the Goodwin Games.

However, more recently  he has been in the current ninth and final season of NBC’S  hit sitcom, The Office as the new customer service representative ,Pete. With the character being new to the show and  The Office quickly progressing through its final season on the air, all thought it was a time to touch base with the actor for an interview. Particularly, we discuss  the initial process and experience involved in being appointed  to the role of  Pete,  his perspective on having been a long-time fan of the show and actually working on  it  as well as other aspects related to how he portrays the character  of Pete.

The actor also talks about his reaction to the show ending this year, the mood and atmosphere on the set.  He also delves into some of his insights on the ninth season  by   discussing his storyline this season in terms of his developing  relationship with  the character of Erin as well as the challenges  which his character faces being  one of the new employees  at the Scranton  branch.

Read through the complete interview below.

Abbas Karimjee.Lets discuss your initial appointment to the role of Pete. Were you contacted for the role or did you audition? Could you please walk us through this initial process?

Jake Lacy:I auditioned for the role in NY and then flew to LA to test for it.  I was out-of-town when I first heard about a new role on The Office.I came back later in the week and auditioned with the casting folks in NY and the people in LA liked it so they flew me out the following week.  Then I flew back east and waited.  I got the call that Friday night.  I packed my bag, flew to LA that Sunday and started filming Monday morning!  It was crazy.

AK:Given that you have been a fan of the show, could you please share your reaction when you discovered that you landed the role?

JL:Oh, I was ecstatic!  The show had been a favorite of mine from the very beginning and getting the opportunity to be a part of it was a dream come true.I’m just a big, big fan of the show and can’t believe I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of it!

AK:How has being a fan of The Office, influenced your  day to day experience of working on the show?

JL: I think being such a fan of the show was helpful. As a viewer I understood what makes this show unique and the challenge has been figuring out what that means as an actor.  The tone of this show is very specific and it took a few weeks for me to find that balance being doing too much and doing too little.

AK :What was your reaction when you discovered that this would be the final season of The Office, both from your perspective as an actor on the show as well as a long-time fan of the show?

JL: The cast found out pretty early on in filming that this would be the last season.  I was still riding the high of being on the show so it really didn’t affect me.  Maybe as a fan I’m sad to see The Office come to an end.  It still seems so far away.  Those decisions are so far out of my control that I try not to get bent out of shape about them.  I’m just grateful to have this incredible job for a year.

AK:With many of the cast and crew having worked on the show through out  entire nine season run, what is the atmosphere on the set like considering that the show is now in its final season?

JL:Everyone has been very welcoming.  The cast has been very warm and kind to a complete stranger setting up shop for a year.  We still have another half dozen episodes to shoot so people are still focused on work. I think in the final few weeks emotions may start to run high but right now everyone is very focused on this week’s episode.

AK:How have you related to Pete?

JL:I’m not sure how to answer this question. All I can say is, bottom line, I’m rooting for Pete.

AK:The character of Pete has been quite similar  to the character of Jim, in terms of his personality, his life goals as well as in  his  desire to  win the affection of   The Office’s receptionist! Given these circumstances, to what extent has  John Kraininski’s  portrayal  of Jim  Halpert  influenced  the way in which you portray  the character of Pete? Also, are there any ways in which you think the two are notably different?.

JL:Well, there’s no denying that their circumstances are similar.  I think Pete is a little bit of an underdog.  Not only is receptionist dating the boss but Pete’s also the new guy at work.  There’s an added element of learning the ropes and not wanting to rustle any feathers.  I think the similarities and differences may become clearer as the season progresses.

AK:Pete expresses a romantic interest towards the receptionist at the Scranton Branch ,Erin   as seen from how he has been flirting  with her at the reception and through other comments. What are your thoughts on the suitability of the two as a couple? What do you think is drawing   Pete to Erin?jake lacy and ellie kemper

JL:I don’t know if Pete and Erin are right for each other.  I just know they have a good time together.  Could they become something?  Absolutely.  Could they wind up really good friends?  Definitely.  I wish I knew where they were headed but the writers keep things pretty secretive.  We don’t find out until we read the script for that week.  As far as what draw Pete to Erin: she’s awesome!  She’s goofy and pretty and charming.  I think Pete’s working at a new job, doesn’t know anybody and finds some kind of connection with Erin.

AK:Although Pete has a romantic interest toward Erin, she is currently involved in a relationship with Andy, who is regional manager.Given these circumstances, what are you able to tell us about the types challenges lay in store for Pete ?Do  you have any other thoughts on this storyline?

JL:Andy is off on the family yacht to save the Bernard’s from complete financial collapse.  That buys Pete a little time to figure out how he feels about Erin and what he’s going to do.  The one thing I can say about Pete is that he’s always interested in trying to doing the right thing.  He would rather wait until the time is right than push something.  Now, I don’t know how the Pete/Erin story unfolds but I hope the character stays true to those characteristics.  That’s one of my favorite aspects of Pete.  He’s a stand up guy.  I think that counts for something.

AK:What is your favorite episode of the current season? Why?

JL:Selfishly, I would say the episode when we built the tower out of complaint cards.  That was the first episode where I got to drive a story. It was awesome! Shooting “Work Bus” was a blast, though. It was a crazy week and many of my best memories of the year were shooting that episode. That was the first time I felt like a real part of the cast.  Yeah, let’s go with Work Bus.  For the good times.

AK: Is there anything else you would you like to say about what might be in store for Pete in his role as a  customer service representative?

JL:Pete and Clark buy a horse-breeding company from Clark’s dying uncle and move to Kentucky for an episode.  That was fun to shoot.  No, that story’s not true.  I think I’ll just let people tune in and see what happens.

AK:What advice do you have for today’s youth who are aspiring to pursue a career in acting?

JL:Be real gentle with your dream. Stick with people who believe in you.  Learn how to be honest with yourself.  Do what your gut tells you.  Work really hard.  I needed, and still need, people to tell me those things and show me how to do them.  Those things are important.

AK:Are there any favorite memories from your work experiences so far which you would like to share, either on screen or off screen?

JL:I got one small improvised moment into an episode.  That was huge. The writer’s are so talented and work so hard that it’s rare for an imporov-ed line to make it to air.I was excited by that.

AK:What message do you have for fans of The Office as the show draws to a close this season?

JL:I’m a fan, too.I know what you’re going through. Please keep watching. Hold my hand and we’ll get through this together.

He has now potentially put himself, family and friends at risk of being harmed or attacked as well as further cult groups developing. Government scrutiny may also go up? What are your thoughts on his decision?

Given how we have seen people of both high and poor character potentially resurrected, what is the criteria for having such an experience or privilege if you can call it that?

Why did the calling suggest that one of the abductors go towards Angelina? Is there more to the vision? The good news is that currently that think Cal is dead so they are not pursuing him.Why did the other abductors get the calling too and what beyond the seemingly superficial connection of having been in the same place in the same time years ago, do they potentially share with her?

What happened between Grace and her step brother? How will this new character contribute to understanding more of Grace?

Will Saanvi confide in Zeeke given how he senses that she is off her game?
